2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

I am not going to rewatch that nightmare but from what I saw during the game the DL was not the biggest issue.

I usually watch the LOS and not the QB, just to get a feel for who is controlling the trenches and the OSU DL was getting penetration (especially up the middle).

I was blown away early on, before the game got out of hand, by how poorly the LB's were run fitting or covering down field.

The scary part to me is that every team left on the schedule (save Illinois) is just like Iowa. No DL in the history of football can sack the QB on every play nor can they appear to be having a good game if the QB can just play pitch and catch with TE's and outlet receivers who are wide open in 3 seconds or less.

Maybe my recollection is hazy from the emotion of the game but that is how I have felt all year, the ease of which QB's can hit receivers makes it seem like the DL is not dominating moreso than they are actually being well blocked/nullified by opposing OL.

Barrett made a lot of dumb mistakes yesterday for sure, but it was incredibly frustrating to see how Iowa always had a receiver (usually a TE or RB out of the backfield) just running wide open, whereas our receivers were so well-guarded it was like JT had to throw the ball into a shoe box.

Been a general theme for a while now.

Not sure what in the hell the answer is to be honest, don't think any of us do really.

The LBs are a serious issue, and I think leadership in general in the back seven is a concern.

Worley is out of position in the middle to begin with and has not been playing well.

Jerome Baker has fallen off the face of the earth, is his head already in the NFL?

I don’t have as many issues with Booker, but he looked foolish in goal line coverage at least once. You either cover the back in the flats or you go after the QB rolling out, you don’t do both, and if you think about it you do neither... which is what happened.

That’s lack of focus or lack of coaching.

I think the dline is fine. They were hitting quick slants across the middle all day because the LBs couldn’t drop into the proper passing lane to save their lives.

The LBs were the biggest weakness against Oklahoma as well, for what it’s worth.

I guess we can all be eternally grateful Penn State didn’t figure that out or they managed to play well for a game.

I hated everything about the defense from snap 1 of the game. Our alignment had ward setting the edge most of the time so it's no wonder they were able to get outside a ton. Then we for some reason decided we wanted to play a ton of zone this game when we majority play man. I'm not giving the DL a pass anymore because it's not producing. As Bosa said who cares about pressures we need sacks.

0 sacks against Nebraska, 1 vs Iowa, 2 Oklahoma and 2 vs Pedo. That's not good enough! Especially with what we have in terms of talent and more importantly depth.

Imo our back 7 looked like shit because we played zone a ton and couldn't get pressure

The Dline was game planned and essentially erased in this game and against OU. You can't expect to brag about being such a dominant D line with a great rotation and freaking Iowa destroys you. I can see Oklahoma, but Iowa, come on now. I'm not going to overreact, but they have some major problems, and maybe its the whole defense, I'm not sure. But my god what did I watch yesterday

I thought our LB would be exploited due to their lack of size and Iowa would run inside. Did not see the TE coming but Iowa has used TE in the past. Baker was better on all instinct.. Luke let him just play..Davis May be teaching a advanced class that they aren’t getting.

I get that each position, DL, LB, DBs all have position coaches. Is there a call (red slant, etc) for the DL to push right? Then another part of the call, for the LBs to flow left (or right, IDK) to fill in the obvious holes, or exploit the push of the DL? Assume the DBs play the WRs as they go down the field, unless a blitz (yes, that is a football play),....point of this diatribe is, do the entire D get together to lay out what the call is to co-ordinate the attack? For the great schemes against PSU, they were lacking against Iowa. Anybody help me clear away the fog? Go Bucks!

We got out coached and out played on D all damn night. I know Worley has slid over, but damnit it doesn't make a cock-hairs difference really between playing Mike and Sam. That should not be a problem at all. Last year our LBs were very very good. This year has been quite a shidt show at times. I am not sold on Davis at all. Maybe we are missing Luke there badly, because our lB play has never been as weak as it is right now. These guys should be much better with the experience they have. Experience at LB is HUGE and we should be more than solid with the snaps and games these guys have under their belts. They should be one of the strongest units on the field. instead it seems to me that they are not prepared. Why are you not "seeing" TEs and RBs running their routes? Why does it seem we are caught flat footed running in the opposite direction? Eye discipline? Not understanding the opponents tendencies? You never saw Speilman out of position like these guys and he wasn't half as fast as any of the three of them. Why? Because he was freaking prepared and disciplined.

Spielman and a Jewell are linebackers that started playing LB at 10 years old and polished their game for years. Our LB have not played LB their whole career..they are still learning their position and my point is Davis is teaching the LB like their Jewel and Spielman instead of teaching to their inexperience.

Remember how everyone wanted to fire Fickell?
I don’t think anyone with half a brain ever questioned Fickell as the LB coach- but the utter disaster that was the 2013 defense was on his shoulders, and Chris Ash was brought in to fix that disaster, which he did, thankfully.

Fickell was not good at designing an overall defensive scheme or calling plays live during games. He was a great LB coach.
