2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

I still have some faith that this group will improve and be decent by the end of the year. It can't come fast enough.

More concerned with the front 7 that was supposed to be dominant. Not sure if I'm being unreasonable in my expectations, but I thought the DL would be able to control games, even against top notch teams. Maybe the secondary is just so porous that it doesn't matter, but I'm not seeing the domination expected from a group that goes 2 deep with NFL level talent.

LBs are a whole nother problem. They were specifically targeted. Hopefully they learn from it and improve.
Defensive line has been fine... our back 7 can't hold up to get us off the field. Yeah we are deep but it's frustrating when you do your part and you see this porous back 7 play bring you down.

Our front is absolutely as advertised. That said I'd say they lost the battle against OU yesterday

The DL had 3 sacks if I remember correctly and OU ran for less than 3 yards a carry on 37 attempts. Mayfield was running for his life all night. Hell the dude was limping several times through out the game. They've held up their end of the bargain. No one expected the back 7 to be this porous. Bama's d-line from last year couldn't make this back 7 look good. There's a lot of work to be done.

this

back 7 isn't there yet and you can see clearly, at least imo, that they will not be up to the '16 crews level anytime soon. This is one of those times where we expected a little too much of the reload.

Gotcha. I think all the gin clouded my memory. Need to go back and watch a shortened version.

My opinion is the Dline has been just as advertised, they are wreaking havoc. OU had a DAMN FINE play action and misdirection scheme, kept us off balance with their play calling, and used our strength, which is speed and our dline rush to our disadvantage by mixing up the play action counter misdirection scheme with a delayed dump off to the FB who begins the play either carrying out a fake or appearing to be in MaX protect. IT was brilliant. It was almost like a middle screen. Our Dline gets so much pressure so quickly, they just wait on a 2 count, after a faked run, and bingo FB now wide ass open in the middle of the field with nothing but green turf in front of him. It was beautiful to watch. Unless you were an OSU fan of course.

With all of that said, that scheme put tremendous stress and pressure on our LBs and made them look incompetent.

I don't think they are incompetent, I think they were outcoached. Something we haven't seen in a while from our offense.

Riley's O had imagination, misdirection, and kept our guys guessing and off balance. Coaching matters. Game plans matter. Schematics matter. Execution matters.

Not a concern, I was told.

Like I said; 2013-esque.

No one said it wasn't a concern. But some of us realized Indiana was one game, they threw it 65 times, and their QB and WR's played well. Not enough to make sweeping conclusions. The Oklahoma game definitely exposed the back 7. Don't go patting yourself on the back too hard though. I'm guessing you were one of the many predicting us to go 7-6 after VT in 2014.

Nah. This game reminded me of the Virginia Tech one in a lot of ways...but I don't see anyway this team has the turnaround that the 2014 team had. Certainly can still have a good season, maybe even make the playoff. But against an elite team we'll just get Clemson'd again, not only because of this secondary, but also because our offense is one dimensional and we refuse to even use the one dimension we have.

You seem fun, but more importantly, very interested in focusing on your fun-ness during the non-fun.

Was more intending to highlight the issues that will cause us to lose multiple games this year if they aren't fixed. The passing offense and passing defense are very real issues right now. That's all. I actually have more faith in the pass defense being fixed.

I wonder if Schiano would consider playing some zone.

This game was vastly different from the 2014 VATech game in that VaTech was making plays I felt confident they would never make again all year. Had a couple of breaks gone differently OSU beats them by two or three TDs. Last Saturday left me feeling like OU would smoke us 8 times out of 10.

I don't think they can turn it around to that extent either but I think people have made too much of that VT loss over the years. It was a guy in his second start against arguably the best college defensive coordinator ever. That was a recipe for disaster from day one.
