That wasn't such a bad result, in fairness.
Not because of his stellar handling of the Bowl invite/ban situation
Agreed though that if he gets an Urban level hire out of this...I'll take it

I have to hope that Geno has something up his sleeve to justify this crazy June whacking. He has to know...not think, not believe but know...that somebody on the A list wants and will take the job. I pray that we're not walking into a mid-Summer coaching search with nothing but our dicks in our hands.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think we swung for a couple of fences before hiring Matta, that he wasn't our first choice. Worked out great though.
Difference this time, IMO, is that tOSU is now willing to pay for a top coach. Matta was a top-7 paid coach for the last several years. I'm not saying it'll lure an "A List" coach, but I think it's something working in our favor that maybe wasn't the past few times tOSU went searching for a coach. Plus the Nike branding is much more prevalent now. That's another plus.I've seen more than a few OSU basketball searches. They all start off with Ohio State thinking that hiring a basketball coach is the same as hiring a football coach. They swing for a few fences, strike out and then settle for somebody on the B list.
As for Archie Miller, I honestly dont know if he was ever that high on Gene's list. Would think if he were, Gene would have planned more accordingly.

and that somebody has to be > Archie Miller or this was a colossal fuck up
really no other way to spin it
I just can't see us poaching a coach from another Big Ten school before the guy has coached his first season. The Archie Miller ship has sailed. If I want to guess the chit that Gene's holding in his back pocket, it's either Sean Miller, Donovan or Jay Wright.
Completely agree that Archie is gone/off the table to OSU. Just using that as the bar that must be passed in order for this to not be a galactic fuck up on Gene's part.
He's either got an A list guy in the bag or fukced this up 9 ways to Sunday.
Not a lot of in between on this one

Matt Norlander is officially an idiot.

Cincinnati's Mick Cronin. One of college basketball's most underrated coaches, and an in-state option. Cronin, 45, has guided Cincinnati to seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments. His teams are always very good on defense. Cronin nearly left Cincinnati to coach UNLV in 2016. He has a top-25 team coming back next year, but Ohio State is unquestionably a jump up from what he has now. Smith specifically cited Matta's lack of success in recruiting as the reason for making this change, so the next coach would have to be a proven recruiter. Cronin has won while, for the most part, bringing in top 75-175 guys.
Wichita State's Gregg Marshall. A top-30 job has opened, meaning Marshall's name must, by law, be brought up. It's important to keep in mind that Marshall makes north of $3 million already. So what's going to get him to leave? A high-level job that will pay him even more. Remains to be seen if Ohio State will do that. If it does, it could make Marshall think long and hard. Wichita State returns basically everybody off a team that went 31-5 last season. Next season's Shockers could be the best in school history. Wichita State is now in the American Athletic Conference. Could he walk away from that to rebuild Ohio State? Marshall is 54 years old.
So I guess if Ohio State is a top 30 job. UC must therefore be what a top 50 , top 75 job ?
