Unfortunately that's why they'll never do it... As for the first few rounds being blow outs and the such? At least those teams have the opportunity to play for it all and that's all you can ask for truly.
I also think the parity in major college football is much greater then in FCS and on down to D3. Lets see how this years playoff would've looked with a 16 team playoff...
1 Clemson v 16 Sparty
2 Oklahoma v 15 TCU (for a third time lol)
3 Georgia v 14 Notre Dame
4 Alabama v 13 Stanford
5 OSU v 12 UCF
6 Wisconsin v 11 Washington
7 Auburn v 10 Miami
8 USC v 9 PED
I don't see too many blowouts in the first round to be honest. Boy that would've been a fun ass playoff round and I feel compelled to finish the bracket now
2nd round
Clemson v Washington
Oklahoma v PED
Georgia v Auburn
Alabama v OSU
3rd round
Clemson v Alabama
Oklahoma v Georgia
4th
Alabama v Georgia
same ending lol[/QUOTE
key word is "opportunity" . The current system (especially with the pre-season polls) virtually eliminates 50% of college football from playing in a NC before the season even starts. And after 6-7 games, any team not named Alabama, Clemson, or OSU with a loss, not in the top 15, has no chance of making it to the CFP.
People are so concerned about an 8-team playoff diluting the product. What about rewarding teams for a good season and allowing them to hash it out on the field in a "true" playoff system. The CFP is a beauty and popularity contest and which team is going to put the most butts in the stands and the team that wins the recruiting battle every year (BAMA..... and throw in OSU, CLEMSON, UGA) is always going to win the "eye test" argument. They have the best players. But Championships should be settled on the field. I didn't hear anyone complaining about how JMU and N. Dakota St. just concluded a 15 game season to cap off the FCS football season. Get rid of the non-conference cupcakes to make the season shorter if need be.
I wasn't a believer of UCF as the season went, but just like some of the past Boise St. teams, it's a shame they weren't given any respect and weren't even given a shot, an "opportunity ", with the season they had and by how well they played against Auburn.
