2017 College Football Playoffs (and Other Bowl Games)

Results say Bama lost one game during the season.

If you seriously believe the Tide to be the third best team in its conference, you're too biased to have a serious discussion with.
It's fact. They were the 3rd best team in their conference.

They had their opportunity to be the best and didn't get it done.

The moment we start disregarding conference championships (as we have the past two years) that will be the moment where the regular season becomes devalued.

There's the problem with the system. I think, I feel, eye test, is more important than actual results. :roll1:

Two teams played in the SEC title game. Bama wasn't one of them.

That is true if we assume there is a perfect correlation between regular season results and conference championships. If that correlation is imperfect, this conclusion may be less confident. And we know the correlation isn't perfect, at least because conference championships are unaffected by regular season cross-conference games.

For the record, the same applies to us last year as far as I'm concerned. I was happy to accept the bid because I'm biased to tOSU, but I could see why anyone outside of our world thought it was BS.

If you're going to have these conference title games and call them "conference championships", then they should mean more than the subjective opinions of teams who didn't compete in one.

Choosing a NC is flawed system. Not everyone will accept the crowned NC as champion. But everyone knows Michigan is owned by tOSU save for the DFBIA.

Bolded... a playoff format shouldn't be CHOOSEN IMO. There's a reason UCF was left out this year and it's not because they're a poor team. They were left out because when people think of UCF they think "mid major" and in turn do not feel them good enough(as do I). They lacked the respect and opportunity to prove it.

Unfortunately it's all just hot air on my part because this will always be apart of major college football due to money being the driving factor. EVERY sport/level of college sports has a playoff based on merit with an extended playoff to prove their champion. Not D1 college football though... We rely on a room full of idiots (majority of which aren't coaches) to decide who they think deserve to go.

Until they are willing to take less money (due to loss of games) to put forth a unbiased playoff system we will live with teams getting in that probably don't deserve it (like us from last year and Alabama this year)

I'll stand by the point that an extended playoff in college football just waters down the whole thing

All the other divisions have extended playoffs.....but there are still only 3/4 teams in most given years that have a legit chance to win in those divisions. Most of the early round games aren't even competitive, it's basically pointless extra games. There might be an upset here and there but it's not nearly enough to warrant it.

Unfortunately that's why they'll never do it... As for the first few rounds being blow outs and the such? At least those teams have the opportunity to play for it all and that's all you can ask for truly.

I also think the parity in major college football is much greater then in FCS and on down to D3. Lets see how this years playoff would've looked with a 16 team playoff...

1 Clemson v 16 Sparty
2 Oklahoma v 15 TCU (for a third time lol)
3 Georgia v 14 Notre Dame
4 Alabama v 13 Stanford
5 OSU v 12 UCF
6 Wisconsin v 11 Washington
7 Auburn v 10 Miami
8 USC v 9 PED

I don't see too many blowouts in the first round to be honest. Boy that would've been a fun ass playoff round and I feel compelled to finish the bracket now

2nd round
Clemson v Washington
Oklahoma v PED
Georgia v Auburn
Alabama v OSU

3rd round
Clemson v Alabama
Oklahoma v Georgia

4th
Alabama v Georgia

same ending lol

key word is "opportunity" . The current system (especially with the pre-season polls) virtually eliminates 50% of college football from playing in a NC before the season even starts. And after 6-7 games, any team not named Alabama, Clemson, or OSU with a loss, not in the top 15, has no chance of making it to the CFP.

People are so concerned about an 8-team playoff diluting the product. What about rewarding teams for a good season and allowing them to hash it out on the field in a "true" playoff system. The CFP is a beauty and popularity contest and which team is going to put the most butts in the stands and the team that wins the recruiting battle every year (BAMA..... and throw in OSU, CLEMSON, UGA) is always going to win the "eye test" argument. They have the best players. But Championships should be settled on the field. I didn't hear anyone complaining about how JMU and N. Dakota St. just concluded a 15 game season to cap off the FCS football season. Get rid of the non-conference cupcakes to make the season shorter if need be.

I wasn't a believer of UCF as the season went, but just like some of the past Boise St. teams, it's a shame they weren't given any respect and weren't even given a shot, an "opportunity ", with the season they had and by how well they played against Auburn.
