2017 CFB Bowl Games Open Thread

I don’t think it had really fixed anything. In fact, I think it has increased controversy in some cases along with slowing the game down even more.

Agreed. That reversed Iowa TD is a prime example of how the rule is consistently misapplied. There was no camera angle showing where the ball was when the player's forearm hit the ground; instead, the ref was speculating where the ball was at that time. To reverse a call based on speculation is a complete misapplication of the rule.

Fines and suspensions, eh? Refs do well to get paid $3,000 per game. How much are you going to take away from them for making a mistake, and how many guys are going to want to do the job under those conditions?

I think limiting replay to reviewing turnovers and scoring plays would be a more attractive option.
What’s it worth to a team that loses a player or a game because of an egregious call or messed up review? If a referee or crew continues to mess up should they be allowed to continue? Did the apology that tOSU received from the BIG give you a warm and fuzzy? Why not suspend the offending official?

Maybe more training is needed. Maybe better pay to attract better and I think younger referees who can keep up with speed of the game is needed.

I don’t know what the answer is, but I do know referees have a direct impact on the quality of the sport for both fans and players alike.
