2017-2018 B1G Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

49-37 lol. 3-20 from 3 for Bucky.

Not a suprising start to the challenge. This is a serious doen year for the B1G. As things currently stand id expect Sparty to run away with the conference.

From what I've seen so far, I do think OSU is stronger right now than many of the middle and bottom B1G teams in certain areas. I do think KBD and Tate are a good combo for us at forward. Kaleb Wesson is an asset (but I do wish Potter would get well soon!). CJ can get hot. We have an intriguing frosh in Jallow and some nights Kam will actually shoot well. Our defense seems above average. We rebound the ball well enough.

But we are thin in the post and at guard and those things aren't changing this season. I think other B1G teams have more room to improve than we do. We don't really have a true PG. CJ handles the role well enough until you speed him up and then it's Turnover/Bad-Decision City.

I thought maybe Holtmann and staff could coach the whole team up enough to mask these deficiencies a little, but the Butler game makes me question that. Everyone we play going forward is going to watch that tape and see exactly how hopeless we are against the press and what little we can do about it. They are going to see how easy it is to get us in foul trouble down low. They are going to expose our perimeter D, especially when we have Dakich in there.

I think on KBD and sheer gumption we're ahead of at least half of the B1G teams at the moment, but I think most of those teams are going to get better than we can get. I just think we have a fairly low ceiling this season, mostly due to our backcourt situation.

I only saw the NW debacle last night

also

Illinois loses to a god awful Wake Forest team. WHo already has losses to Georgia Southern, Libery and Drake.

Iowa gets boat raced 41-17 in the 2nd half to lose to Va Tech after being tied at the half.

Rutgers predictably loses to FSU

Brutal showing here. Purdue did happen to beat Louisville at least.

For as bad as Indiana looks at times, they still have a player that can break down a defense and score (Robert Johnson). De'ron Davis is a good post presence. Buckeyes have neither of those to even try to tread water.

Plus, any game in Assembly is winnable (except Indiana State?).

edit- if I'm going to be salty tonight, I may as well say the Buckeyes don't have any of those 3 things (atmosphere) to carry them

ok I'm done.

Went to the ND/MSU game last night at the Breslin. MSU went deep into their bench in the first half and just overpowered ND. ND tried to make a game of it in the second half, but to little to late. MSU out rebounded them something like 40-20. I hate to say this but I anticipate that MSU is going to plunger the Buckeyes with ease......

MSU is likely going to plunger the whole conference this year.

Yea, the schedule is favorable this year. 9 league road games for OSU, but the NW game is off campus at DePaul's old arena, they got a bit of a break at the Kohl Center with a weakened crowd, and they play Minnesota in New York as a road game. The game at Purdue will be the only true road game vs a ranked team in league play for OSU.

I feel pretty good about a .500 finish in conference the way things currently stand and with our schedule.

.500 would be a victory considering the depleted roster and last years 7-11 effort.
