2016 tOSU Really Basic Defense Discussion

Not to piss on our campfire, but while our defense has been pretty damn good overall, it's not world-class...yet. I've watched the OU game three times now, and they actually moved the ball very well on at least four drives. They doinked a short FG (not on their offense), and should've had a TD instead of a FG in the first half (their fourth or fifth drive), where the WR tripped inside in five and a few plays later a WR dropped a slant near the goal line (where he subsequently got blown up). The also had over 250 yards of offense in the first half and over 400 yards for the game. While we weren't in any danger of losing the game, they could've easily ended up with 31 points (24 of which were by offense).

Meyer himself said during the on-field post-game interview that they still need work...
Very true but a couple things to that mili...

1. Conley gets hurt basically after the first quarter. You'd have to imagine even if we love Arquette/Ward that Conley would've done a better job had he played.

2. While the player fell down inside the 5 yard line for OU the only reason he caught the ball was our man fell down. That just doesn't happen very much at all.

3. 7 of their 24 came on a kickoff return which shouldn't have counted anyways.

What I will give you is we need 1 of 2 things here... Damon Webb either needs to play better or he needs to get off the field now. Honestly I've been very underwhelmed with his performance now 3 weeks in a row. Every large play has been at his expense and while I believe one day he will be a good player right now I want to see Erik Smith given an opportunity.

Webb doesn't have an INT yet which is the only player from our starting 4 to not have one. With Smiths nose for the football I'd really like to see Erik given a shot over Webb.

2. The corner was beat and dove to trip up the WR, which ended up being the smart thing to do. If he didn't dive to trip the WR it was a TD.
3. The fact that Mixon was a total bonehead by dropping the ball before he crossed the goal line doesn't negate the fact he beat the coverage.

Not how I saw Lattimores slip mili...for what it's worth even Lattimore said he slipped.

As for the kick return. The point was automatically 7 points was charged to the defense when it has nothing to do with that score. Sure he beat our kick coverage but it's not like that's the defenses fault

Technically, the KO TD is counted in the scoring defense stats in NCAA stats. But, I do agree it shouldn't. Still, they moved the ball a lot more than the hype suggests...if OU had a decent FG kicker they'd have a minimum of 20 offensive points, and very possibly 24 offensive points. Giving up 250+ yards in a half is hardly shutting a team down. What was great about the defense is that they remained resilient and held OU's scoring to about as low as could be expected for the amount of yards OU got.

Absolutely I agree.. lots of room for improvement and I hate to come back to it again but I attribute a lot of it to them picking on Webb.

That reverse they pulled off? Webb fell for it. The Andrew's long completion and TD? Webb. The long run by Perine? Webb got stiff armed.

The more I watch the game the more I just don't see it with Damon. If anything put Lattimore at Safety and then put Ward at Corner if Erik Smith can't go.

No doubt im being hard on him here but I just don't see it through 3 games like I do the other 3 db.

Just a quick thought on Damon Webb; and I haven't paid close enough attention to him to have a sense of how well he's played so far. While Webb has game experience before this year, to my understanding it's mostly been spot duty at nickel back, with little-to-no game experience at safety. I'm sure everyone remembers that in Gareon Conley's first start, they had to pull him for an injured Eli Apple due to his performance, and he didn't see the field too much after that until the following season. Not every great player is great at the outset. It is plausible that Webb will improve significantly over the course of this season as he gets more game experience at safety.

That's too in depth. Let's keep the discussion basic.

I can't wait to see how they play against a pro style team. A stationary QB is in for a world of hurt. I also think the blitzes become a little more "exotic" when the threat of escape isn't there.

This

IU and Nebraska are the only other true spread teams I can think of

The rest feature Pro Style offenses and big statue QB's (Wisky, MSU and tsun)

The Pedsters feature a MAC level OL (and DL for that matter) so who gives a shit what style of offensive fuckery they run.

It doesn't bother me that the defense gave up 2 TD's and a FG. If they do that from here on out in the reg season, I'd suspect Ohio State will win 9 more games. The Oklahoma offense is designed to move the ball, especially between the 30's, and this past week aside, Baker Mayfield can play. I don't think he has the weapons out wide that JT Barrett has, but the dude can throw the ball around - and he did. What he also did was throw picks, take sacks, and make some bad throws - all credit to Ohio State's scheme and talent.

They gave up a few hits to Mixon, but Oklahoma couldn't make a living running on them. I knew the Silver Bullets had them when OU went to the double reverse to get a big hit. It worked, but it also meant they felt they had to - which was a good sign. In short, we should feel good about this defense. Ohio State's offense will sometimes put the D in a bad spot, and offenses are so good these days that they will get some yards and score. For me, I just want the opponent to have to work really hard to sustain drives and score. Ohio State can get better on defense, and they can be more elaborate in what they do to pressure, but for right now, what they are doing seems to be very, very effective, especially if they continue to get takeaways and score.

What's my fear with that side of the ball? That we will go to, say, East Lansing, in late November, run into crappy weather that grounds the OSU passing attack, and we have to win a 14-10 LOS/run slog game (similar to last year). I'm not sure that's what they are built for, but hopefully it will be warm and dry with calms winds throughout the season.
