2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Just watched the game again tonight all of the way through. My main thought after watching the offense: Catch the damn ball. I didnt realize we dropped that many chances. JT will settle down sooner I'm sure if guys make more plays on the ball. Some were a bit off but there were too many catchable balls that went awry.

Second thing is stop calling automatic runs for JT. He's going to get hurt.

Little by little we are figuring this out... next thing we need to figure out is how to gain success without smashing JT in the ground

I'm not concerned about the passing game. JT Had the right idea many many times and if not for a 20 second monsoon on his INT play and then 6 drops we are talking about walking away with a win

URBAN MEYER: OHIO STATE WIDE RECEIVERS 'NOWHERE NEAR' WHERE THEY NEED TO BE YET

75587_h.jpg,qitok=NbsJHBjP.pagespeed.ce.kdA38ukUh7.jpg

With Ohio State facing a 1st-and-15 following a false start, J.T. Barrett dropped back to pass, surveyed the field and rifled a strike to James Clark over the middle.

Clark turned, cut up field then dove for 12 yards to Wisconsin's 8-yard line. Three plays later, Barrett found Noah Brown in the corner of the end zone on a fade route for what eventually represented Ohio State's game-winning touchdown against the Badgers in a 30-23 overtime victory last Saturday. But it was Clark's catch—his only one in the game—that got the offense moving in the right direction following a penalty.

“Huge catch,” Urban Meyer said Wednesday.

Such a play is a rarity for Clark, who only has four catches for 29 yards in what is now his third year playing. All of those came this season. He is one of the players Meyer and the rest of the Ohio State staff continue to wait on to develop, and one of the guys they know they will need down the stretch if the team's passing game is ever going to get to where it needs to be in 2016.

“We're just not near satisfied,” Meyer said. “We're nowhere near we need to be at that position yet.”

Buckeyes are golden in the red zone this season

Quarterback J.T. Barrett scores on a 1-yard run against Wisconsin, contributing to the Ohio State offense's success rate of scoring touchdowns inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

With 41 seconds left in regulation on Saturday against Wisconsin, Ohio State took possession at its 15-yard line with the score tied.

The Buckeyes had two timeouts left, and they needed to gain about 50 yards for a reasonable chance at a field goal. Difficult but doable, especially given coach Urban Meyer’s aggressive nature.

Instead, the Buckeyes handed off once and were content to go to overtime. Meyer might not embrace all aspects of analytics, but he understood that if a game’s fate rests on play in the red zone, he’ll take his chances. That’s what overtime is, even if possession begins at the 25 and not the 20 that’s the official start of the red zone.

Sure enough, Meyer’s hunch proved correct. The Buckeyes scored a touchdown to open overtime. Wisconsin completed a pass to Ohio State’s 4 to set up first-and-goal, but the Buckeyes didn’t allow another yard. A gang sack of quarterback Alex Hornibrook on fourth down preserved the Buckeyes’ 30-23 victory.

Heading into this week’s game at Penn State, the Buckeyes offense has been solid punching the ball in from inside their opponents’ 20. Ohio State has scored touchdowns on 24 of 35 trips (68.6 percent)

“When we’ve needed to punch it in, we have,” offensive coordinator Ed Warinner said. “We’ve had to kick a few field goals down there … but I think our efficiency down there is pretty good.”

OHIO STATE’S OFFENSE HASN’T ‘REACH OUR CEILING YET’ AT SEASON’S MIDWAY POINT

75628_h.jpg,qitok=wSVxrOO6.pagespeed.ce.CJrRXr267x.jpg

Through six games, Ohio State ranks 12th nationally in total offense (516.5 yards per game), fourth in scoring offense (49.3 points per game) and fourth in rushing offense (300.5 yards per game).

Additionally, the Buckeyes currently rank eighth in the country in third-down conversions (50.6 percent) and they’re 11th nationally with an average of 26.3 first downs per game.

Those are the statistics. Those are the facts and they’re awfully impressive.

But when Ohio State players and coaches are asked if the team’s offense is anywhere close to what it can be, the response is a simple shrug of the shoulders.

“We’re really pushing ourselves right now regardless of our record and rankings and all that, that’s not what we’re looking at,” co-offensive coordinator Ed Warinner said Wednesday after practice. “It’s ‘How do we get better each and every day, every individual?’”

“Myself. Every player, every coach. We’re trying to push everybody to maximize because we haven’t reached our ceiling yet.”

If Ohio State hasn't reached its ceiling yet, well, look out.

One area the Buckeyes can almost certainly improve to help reach it is the passing game and, in particular, the deep passing attack.

Ohio State hasn’t necessarily been able to take the top off of the defense over the last two weeks and even though J.T. Barrett made a lot of impressive throws Saturday against Wisconsin, the inability to create a big play through the air almost cost the Buckeyes.

“We just haven’t been able to have those big hits,” head coach Urban Meyer said Thursday on his weekly radio show.

I have a general calm about this game tomorrow. With bucky I was confident we would win but I didn't feel right. This one? Feel good as fuck.

I really wish they'd settle on a WR rotation in this game and mix up the run/pass ratio. As was said I hope Weber is given the opportunity go shine
