2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Not at all worried about this offense. A lot of youth at the skill positions, but a ton of talent, and guys like Wilson and Samuel to provide some leadership. Our offensive line is lacking some experience, but not a lot of youth really. 3 of the 5 will have had significant playing time, and there has been a ton of redshirting on the o-line. We will have 1 5th year guy, probably 2 4th year guys, 1 or 2 3rd year guys and at most we will start only one true sophmore (or rFR). Throw in JT sticking around and this is going to be a pretty good offense, so long as Beck can do better with 1 year of Urban's system under his belt. We might get closer to the 2014 offense, but I have no doubt it will equal the 2015 offense.

They will have experience at QB and a ton of young talent hungry to make a name for themselves. Like TampaBuckeye, I am not worried about that part in the least.

One concern, that others have mentioned, is the backup QB and the fact that he will almost certainly be called into duty at some point (and I don't mean in mop up time).

One more thing to consider is that the '15 team had so many stars sometimes it felt as though there was a forced effort to distribute the ball. This '16 team may be able to just find it's one true thing to hang it's hat on with a little more freedom than last year.

I only disagree with what you said about the offense forcing to distribute the ball to its stars. I don't think they did that enough! The H back was barely used, the only this forced were JT running, Braxton out of the wildcat which fooled no one after VA tech because he was never going to attempt a pass and Cardale forcing deep throws early. There was hardly any distribution last year, which was a major frusterstion. Little TE targets, few young guys were thrown to or stepped, and offense simplified to the point where it was run Zeke and JT and occasionally pass to Thomas. I'm hoping next year that there actually is distribution As guys like McLaurin, Campbell should no longer be nervous when the lights come on. The WR corp is my biggest concern, but its cautious optimism because there's a lot of talent, its just unproven. I hope we can finally use the TE more as we have some very athletic stretch the field types , and I hope they don't get stuck blocking

Agreed that next year we very well may be able to be balanced to not having a dominate player like zeke. Now we can be balanced, take what they're giving us, and set things up a little better. The offense can probably be more natural now IMO.

With uncertainty at TE and WR, has anyone heard anything about Rashod Berry and AJ Alexander? Both athletic freaks with great size and speed but don't have a true position yet. And both could be very good end zone threats

Urban and co. have been killing it on the recruiting trail, so talent isn't an issue. What we're losing is experience, but seems 2015 got stuck in a rut for a variety of reasons despite all the experience (partially because of it?).
The idea of JT "The Distributor" getting the ball to so many different new players w/o so many playcalls designed for 1 guy or another to get his touches... sounds great. Just hope we can get back to a balanced offense -- like 2014. Felt a little too much like 2013... riding the QB read-option and a stud RB (that we forgot about against Sparty both years)

Plus 1. Too many proven returning starters and I think we lost the drive and attitude. In 2014 we had to replace most of the team and that turned out pretty well. We are looking at a preseason 8-12 ranking, the lower the better.

Urban seems to be able to snap his fingers and conjure great skill players. Having Barrett gives them a great shot. The question of how good the offense will be hinges on the OL. They seem to have recruited very, very well there and Ed Warriner is one of the best in the business. So, I am not that worried about that side of the ball.

The 15 Bucks were uber talented, but the intangibles were never good until it didn't matter. Perhaps new, hungry players will help the 16 team have those.

It boggles my mind how some people think it's better to start to season ranked as low as possible. As for the 8-12 ranking prediction, even though we lose a shit ton of talent, pollsters know we reload and we still have a shit ton (albeit less experienced) of talent.
