2016 CFB Week 2 Open Thread

The penalty was on Oklahoma State for intentional grounding on 4th down, trying to burn the clock. CMU gets one play.

You are correct. Corrected original post some to fix it. I stated it incorrectly. The penalty was on the team in possession. That was OK State. They were in possession and therefore, game over. The penalty was on 4th down and they gave an untimed play to Central Michigan.

OK State still should have won. I like the upsets and don't care a out either team but I do like getting things right.

It usually works that way because the defense declines the penalty. In this case, CMU accepted it. The penalty includes a loss of down, so the ball goes over to CMU. They get one play because the game can't end on an accepted penalty.

What you are saying definitely seems correct but according to the head refs and the interpretation of that rule after having time to review...apparently that is not the case. It is confusing but if they are coming out and saying they got it wrong, it seems to be an easy fix. I guess that is the point I am trying to make but I guess it wasn't that easy last year for the Miami/Duke game so I suppose nothing will be done.

Okay, we play Bowling Green and Tulsa this year, but everybody has heard of them. I just watched recaps of games by Southern teams against Wofford, something Prarie, and another team I will never hear about again. What the hell.

Do you even SEC bro?

They struggle with those FCS teams you've never heard of because they are looking ahead to SEC play.

Ok so it's ESPN but this is what I've found on the ending...

"There's a rule that says that the game cannot end on an accepted live ball foul. That's the rule. There's an exception to the rule that says if enforcement of the foul involves a loss of down, then that brings the game to an end," O'Dey told a pool reporter.

"So in that situation, we've had the opportunity to run it back through our hierarchy, which includes the national rules editor, and he confirmed that should have been a loss of down and the end of the game at that point, so that extension should not have happened."

The rule in question is Rule 3, Section 2, Article 3.1 in the NCAA football rule book: "A period shall be extended for an untimed down if...a penalty is accepted for a live-ball foul(s). (Exception: Rule 10-2-5-a). The period is not extended if the foul is by the team in possession and the statement of the penalty includes loss of down."
