2016-2017 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I really do not know what can fix this team (maybe program) at this point, because Kaleb Wesson and Braxton Beverly aren't exactly program changers. Unless subtracting Marc Loving makes that much of a difference, I don't see how next year will be that much different.

I don't want to see Thad go out like this. I kinda wish he'd continue purging or find some sort of new recipe.

I want to see these 5 on the floor together:

Lyle
Tate
Williams
Potter
Thompson

Potter can easily play stretch 4 at least on offense and Tate is all over the place so it doesnt really matter. I just think our rebounding would improve and Potter is one of the best shooters

Its going to be a long rest of the season.

They seem to be able to hang with better teams but they just dont have that it factor to push over the top and actually beat them. Then you get the side of them where they play down to conpetition, lose or nearly lose to teams they definitely should not.

Potter doesn't do anything a stretch 4 can do other than shoot and he would be a disaster trying to defend anyone on the perimeter. He's a pick and pop 5. I think he got some open looks tonight because Haas is pretty slow and unable to defend the lane and close out and Swanigan isn't the quickest big in the land either. We could have played 2 bigs when they played 2 bigs, but this is probably the only team in the league we could do that against.

I think a little more CJ and a little less Loving is about the only change I could potentially see as a benefit, but now with KBD out Loving and Tate will continue to get as many minutes as they can handle.

I am not blaming the officials for the loss last night but I just think that they let Purdue's big guys get away with quite a bit and called quite a few "touch" fouls on our guys. Shit Haas one-time almost ran over Loving and no foul was called.

Also, I just wonder if Lyle had enough time to take the ball all the way to the basket on the last play. Maybe he did not have enough time… Not sure about that.

Starting a lineup with Potter, Thompson, Tate along with 2 any other guys would be more of a disaster. They lack outside shooting now and with that type of find out that would go down even further.

A one-point loss to the 20th-ranked team is not a bad loss and the guys took this one pretty hard.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Marc Loving sat glassy-eyed and seemingly on the verge of tears for the entire six-minute postgame press conference after Ohio State's 76-75 loss to Purdue on Thursday night.

It was a rare sign of emotion from Ohio State's lone senior. These losses look like they're starting to take a toll.

In a vacuum, a one-point loss to the No. 20 team in the country can be both frustrating and encouraging. But these aren't happening in a vacuum. Losses like Thursday night's are almost becoming the norm for Ohio State.

The only problem I have with playing Potter as a 4 now is that we didn't even practice it earlier in the pre-B1G season. I was kind of high on Potter getting the starting nod, but Matta did absolutely nothing early on to build his confidence and give him a role. He should have had a game or two where he had more than 5 three-point attempts by design, a true stretch big. I never saw it. He just shot a three here and there where he was open.

That being said, the loss of KBD does open the door to working out some other options. Thompson plays hard, and deserves plenty of minutes. I'm a little perplexed about the minutes we are getting from Kam. I like him in spots, but he's not the greatest ball-handler or defender. 37 vs. Illinois and 39 against Purdue?

The only problem with Thompson is the more minutes that he plays the more fouls he will generate. I think that is one of the main reasons that Matta did not start him at the beginning of the season. Kam is one of the hardest working guys on the team if you believe what D Russell said about him a couple years ago. However, his shooting has been a little bit of a disappointment this season and you are correct about his ball handling and defense. Do not know who else Matta has to play the minutes you take away from Williams. I guess Wesson but that is not going to help us very much this season.

The more I look at the rest of the conference, the more I have to conclude that finishing 13th or 14th is likely. (We still should beat Rutgers, I guess.) If that happens, I wonder what Matta's job security is going to look like.

That, for some reason, was addressed in the UCLA game thread.. I wish we could keep all of the discussion about his job security in his thread.

This in a nut shell is perhaps one of my biggest issues with Matta over the years. He does nothing to develop a bench early in the year. By the end of the year he is usually only playing 6 maybe 7 guys.
