Game Thread 2015 Sugar Bowl: (1) Alabama vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 1st @ 8:30p ET, ESPN (civilized thread)

I didn't see any replies to the question of if anyone here was planning to go to NO...

I'm out. Gotta work the night before. Too bad, I'd love to make the trip. Especially if you're going, so that I could tell you more stories from my time spent in 'Bama. You can't imagine the funny looks you get while decked completely out in Ohio State gear walking around out there.

I keep hoping so...then right as we get a post that almost seems ok, we get a shot about Urban's health or some stupid "Big Boy" football-like comparison or something....it's depressing...Bama has a big fanbase and I keep hoping some of them will wander over here eventually.

I apologize if I came across as rude, but flaming is an art in AL. We all have some pretty thick skins...

In all these years I've lived in the South, I've had one minor bad experience with a SEC fan that was quickly handled by the rest of his group. I've found the stadium experiences welcoming, the fans passionate, fun, and generous and have never felt like an outsider.

If you don't mind me asking, where in the South are you located? I realize I've been a bit harsh with my comments. I generally love Southern folks, for the record.

Serious post:

I think M*ch*g*n State gave us a good look at what to expect from Alabama. However, since Alabama is better on offense at pretty much every positions I don't think they'll be able to defend the same way. Particularly, I don't think the Buckeyes will be able to put Doran Grant on an island against Amari Cooper. It's going to take a team approach to try to contain him, and what will that cost in defending the run? Also, Alabama has more talent at the other receiver positions. Even though those players are not targeted that much, they have players capable of causing damage if the first option is taken away, which MSU did not.

Alabama presents a lot of problems for the Buckeye defense, but I'm optimistic for a couple reasons:
  • Despite the evolution of the Buckeye defense, it still does a pretty good job of defending pro-style attacks. It's in their DNA, I guess.
  • Also, when the Buckeyes have had to come up with an oppoenent-specific gameplan against a quality team instead of just plugging in their base defense and counting on out-talenting the opposition, they have given their best performances
On the other side of things, the trenches are key. Alabama has depth and talent unlike any other team the Buckeyes have faced. Cardale Jones is not going to have as much time as he did against Wisconsin. He was great in that game, but there is a steep learning curve over these next few weeks nonetheless. Fortunately I think the back seven for Alabama is flawed, and Ohio State should be able to stretch them in both directions. Again, the game against MSU provides a guide for how to approach Alabama. Ohio State won't be able to just run up the middle on these guys. However, if they attack the edges first they can open up an interior run game at some point.

I lived in the south from 1995-2011.

Tailgated around and checked out plenty of SEC action but that was well before they went on their holier than thou kick the past few years. In fact back then the SEC East was dominant and the west was something far from dominant.

The Bama guys would be able to tell us better but I found the Gators to be about the only universally reviled fan base.
