Game Thread 2015 Sugar Bowl: (1) Alabama vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 1st @ 8:30p ET, ESPN (civilized thread)

Just re-watched the game (thanks, DUBBS!) and realized Trey DePriest appears to have gotten really, really fat and less athletic. He blitzed on the long pass that Corey Smith alligator armed in the 3rd Q, and Elliott met him in the hole and bent him over backwards.

I was wondering if they were converting him into a short squat defensive end or something....

I thought the same thing. In this age of S&C, there's no way that is unintentional. He's a good player, but not good enough to get on the field fat and lazy... Don't believe for a second he's lazy... Fat? For a LB? Yup, sure do. I think it took away, significantly, from his game.

I'm pretty sure he didn't need to touch the ball.

I'm 99.99% certain you are correct

its just like an onside kick, live ball after 10 yards

our guys should have attempted a recovery there
I'm 99.99% certain you're both incorrect. If a ball hits the endzone without being touched, the ball is blown dead as a touchback.

I'm a few pages behind so sorry if this has already been addressed.

Correct. In college if it hits the endzone either by rolling there or directly, but is untouched, then it's dead. but if it's touched then it's live. Not that this is part of the question, but if you touch it and then it goes into the endzone, you can also take a knee.

Pros it's live in the endzone I believe, even if untouched. And I think same rule for a knee.

One rule on kickoffs that I'm not a fan of is if you catch the ball while standing out of bounds, the kick is deemed to have gone out of bounds. I suppose I get it since you shouldn't be penalized for a bad kick, but you can take advantage of it if you're smart.

Re- watching the game, myself.

Good thing Bama went 8-9 pro prospects deep on their defensive line. Otherwise it would have only been 4-6 players that just got the train run on them.
I rewatched it a few times and the one thing that always strikes me when rewatching is just how good their punter was. He's the sole reason this didn't get out of hand to be honest IMO. We could not run our normal offense because of the fear of getting a safety or having a back breaking turnover for pretty much the last 21 minutes of the game. While our defense gave up two plays of 50 through the air I am very impressed with the resolve of our defense because after we went up two scores our offense put our defense in a number of horrible positions that were just begging to give up points (none worse than the 20 yard punt Johnston had).

All the more reason why I'm confident we win our next one. We will constantly put them in bad spots such as what Alabama did to us because we once again will have the best punter/coverage teams. Against Alabama our coverage teams were excellent but their punter was the best I've ever seen and I was wrong to think Johnston was just as good because he got his lunch handed to him by 15 on their team.

I believe the phrase for the Bama punter is 'tall drink of water'.

edit: Just got the point before halftime, the big scramble by 12 gauge. He plants Collins on his ass.

Still laughing about Bama fans not believing Cardale would hurt them scrambling or running.

I can't believe I almost went to bed when it went 21-6

part of the reason was because I had to get up for work at 430am that next morning, so I was getting pretty tired. I even took some Zquil to help me get to bed. I saw on my phone it was 21-13, and OSU just got the ball back, I turned it on to watch that drive, and well....that Zquill ended up having zero effect

I would have regret it for the rest of my life if I had missed this game with my dad. This was probably the most emotional (don't mean like crying, but just elation) I have seen from him in a very long time. OSU just hasn't had a game like this in several years. So happy I watched this and celebrated with my dad until about 230am

I had to work at 5:30 Friday. Ended up no showing because I didn't get to sleep until at least 2:30. My boss completely understood lol.

That play particularly really ticked my dad and I. That secondary saw 250 pounds running full steam ahead and everything parted like the red sea lol

Nope, ball is still dead in the end zone if untouched in the NFL. If it's touched by the kick coverage, it's a touchback for the receiving team. In turn, if it hits a player (on the receiving squad) and rolls into the end zone, it is a live ball. Same rules apply.
