Game Thread 2015 National Championship Game: (2) Oregon vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 12th @ 8:30p ET, ESPN

So we claim 8 but it is really 6 in the eyes of everyone else

Every school does that. I personally recognize "only" 6 and don't bother to parse out stuff for other schools like which of Alabama's 587 claimed championships are "legitimate."

That said, I don't mind the claim of 8 when not having shares for years like 1996, 1998, and 1973 is pretty damn arbitrary.

Tsun fans are already making 2015 = 1969 predictions. I want to win 100-0 in that giant hole in the ground next season.
Schembechler played for Woody at Miami, earned his master's degree at Ohio State, and was an assistant for Woody for several years at Ohio State, so Bo had serious ties with both Woody and Ohio State and thus had a shit-ton invested in his first Game. There is absolutely no connection whatsoever between Hairball and Meyer or Ohio State.

It's not arbitrary. The NCAA recognizes four sources for titles from 1936 onward: AP, FWAA, NFF, UPI/coaches. Those are what we count. None of those sources recognized us in 1973, 1996, or 1998, but one of them did in 1961 and 1970.

I get that. I'm saying that it's arbitrary that none of the recognized sources gave one to us in those years. Maybe arbitrary isn't the right word, but I think there was a strong case for OSU getting a piece in each of those years (actually not 1998 since UT ran the table, but in terms of getting the shot to play UT over Outzen-led FSU). Not bitching about it, but just saying ithat t makes me sweat any perceived undeservedness for year like 1970 (for which I personally don't think any of the NCAA-approved awarders should have recognized OSU)

I think the entity that awarded us the title in 1970 did so before the bowl games. Had we beaten Stanford in the 1971 Rose Bowl we would've been consensus national champs, but since we lost we only had the one awarded prior to the bowl.
