Game Thread 2015 National Championship Game: (2) Oregon vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 12th @ 8:30p ET, ESPN

I will throw my hat into the ring here... oregon is better this year at QB, offensiive lines roughly similar, worse at tight end (dickson), and not as good at RB. What was terrifying about the 09 ducks team was james and kenyon on special teams. Also didn't that team have the all time leading reciever in oregon history? Some white guy maybe his name was pohl or something similar...

Our secondary is light years better than 09... Grant is better than chikwa, apple over torrence, powell over anderson, and bell is better than coleman

Who is out for oregon in this game? Everytime someone posts about injuries a new name is mentioned?

The only one that is out new from those who started the RB is the WR/KR #5. He is a legit loss for them.

The rest are just dudes they've lost through the year I believe. They have had some serious attrition....they aren't starting their 3rd QB or anything but they have lost some guys.

Um, let's not get crazy now. Chekwa and Coleman were both All Americans (Coleman in 2009, Chekwa in 2010), and putting Tyvis Powell ahead of anybody is a stretch. The 2014 secondary may be better (debatable), but it's certainly not "light years better".

Win or lose, I'd ride with Cardale any day of the week over Mariota in this game. The guy has left it all on the field for us over these last two games in his first two starts at QB. Dominating performance against Wiscy and gave Bama his best uppercut to the chin. I'm proud of our guy, man. Proud of all of them... but to be in CJ's shoes doing this... well, the guy has had balls of steel. How he doesn't fold being down 21-6 after hearing how a 3rd string QB would never beat Bama and being on that huge of a stage is just flat out amazing to me.

We could be facing the Patriots next week and I'd still say Cardale deserves the keys. Not because he's the best, but because he has the heart to be the best on the field next Monday night. Good news is, we shouldn't even need him to be with Zeke running like a damn tank lately.

you must have a short memory. I'm not saying Mariota is not superior but you are saying that with the knowledge of tOSU rolling Masolli. This Oregon team is not much different than the 09 version and that starts at QB.
He is not the one suffering from a short memory.

edit: but I'm apparently suffering from year comprehension issues  I'll edit the below stats to include 2009, not 08.

Masoli was a fullback sized dual threat QB with the quickness of Tebow, a fraction of the strength and far less passing proficiency.

2008:

2009:

better but still a bunch of doozies through the air.

Season stats from the year they played OSU:

69% vs 58%
4124 vs 2147 yds
40 td vs 15 td
3 int vs 6 int

731 yds vs 668 yds
5.8 ypc vs 5.5 ypc
15 td vs 103 td

Masoli put up comparable numbers on the ground (though they weren't close as runners, especially when things break down). He isn't in the same galaxy as a passer.

I think Oregon will have to sell out on the run, and I think that may only slow it down and not necessarily stop it. Problem is Jones slinging to smith, thomas, marshall and company has prooven thus far to be dangerous.
I don't expect tOSU to stop oregon consistently on d either but at least occasionally. turnovers are half the battle and oregon may need to win the battle by a turnover or two to win the game.

At the beginning of the year I would agree 100% on the DBs and LBs... right now not so much.

Tyvis Powell is equal to or greater than Anderson Russell and Vonn Bell is comparable to Kurt Coleman IMO.

We had an extremely good Nickel in Jermale Hines that year, and although Armani Reeves isn't nearly the physical presence that Hines was, I think Reeves is very capable and underrated.

At CB, Doran Grant equals Chimdi Chekwa and Apple is equal to or greater than Devon Torrance.

Finally, I think guys like Conley and Burrows provide depth in the secondary that wasnt there in '09.

At LB I think Darron Lee is comparable to Brian Rolle while Josh Perry and Curtis Grant are markedly better than Spitler but a step down from Homan.

I worry about Perry and/or Grant in space against the Ducks.

At DT I agree the depth is not there (although Schutt had a strong game against Wisky) but I think Bennett is better than Larrimore and Worthington while Adolphus is comparable to both.

Not having Spence hurts a lot as he would be the Thaddeus Gibson comparison, but clearly Bosa and Heyward are comparable.

We can quibble over details, but outside of proven DL depth I don't think this years unit is markedly worse than '09.

Most importantly, they have improved so much throughout the year and I think they are still on an upward trajectory given their youth.
The main point was that OSU manhandled that offense for large stretches of that drive. I can't envision that happening again, between the much better QB in Mariota and a much more flawed OSU defense. I do expect them to make some plays but scoring less than 35 is a recipe to lose.

Depth chart

DE Heyward vs Bosa - I'm taking Heyward, because I know which player I'm getting, and I need that discipline to stop Oregon. Bosa when he's on surpasses Cam, but his floor is lower than Cam's.

DT Worthington vs Washington - I lean towards Doug in this game, though it's close.

DT Larimore/Denlinger vs Bennett is an interesting battle. Mike is a top-20 pick but Larimore was so stout and enormous in this game. The ability to actually rely on a replacement in a tiring, uptempo game is huge as well.

DE Gibson vs Miller/Frazier - One huge game this post season aside (For both), this isn't a very close battle. Obviously Spence would have been pretty salty.

SLB Spitler vs Perry is a tough call. Spitler was undervalued and showed more consistency on the field than Josh. I think it's at worst a wash and possibly a small victory for 09.

MLB Rolle was a demon. So fast, so instinctive, so versatile. Grant would compare better but lose to Spitler at MLB, but obviously gets destroyed vs Rolle.

WLB Homan vs Lee is interesting. Darron is so quick and an excellent blitzer, but he's also undersized. I'd also submit that Darron probably battles against Jermale Hines if you put him on that squad. Is this a win for the new team? Maybe, depending on how you classify Darron. I think he'd be a star and probably be in a dogfight with Jermale.

CB Grant might be close to the 09 version of Chekwa. Either way that's a wash and with the disparities elsewhere, they need some wins to balance it out.

S Coleman was an all-american. Bell is miles away from there, despite making some clutch interceptions lately. I'd be thrilled with Anderson Russell level play there, let alone Coleman.

S Russell was much maligned but that was in contrast to the caliber of players OSU has fielded in the secondary. Powell has just as many breakdowns in coverage and is considerably worse against the run.

CB Torrence and Apple are probably close.

OSU has a decent to good defense with 3 studs in Bosa, Bennett and Lee. The problem is the weaknesses are far more glaring than those on the 09 team. When those guys play above their abilities and are merely decent, the 14 D becomes good to very good. When they play about like usual, it can become a very suspect defense on the ground.[/URL]

2009 starters that would start on this team

Chekwa over Apple
Coleman over either
Rolle over Grant
Homan over Perry
Gibson* over Miller
Heyward* over Washington

* - You could also start Bosa-Larimore-Bennett-Heyward. Regardless the merger would involve 2 demotions.

2014 starters that would start for 2009:

Grant over Torrence
Bosa over Gibson
Lee vs Hines would be a tough battle

@jwinslow

My rebuttal would be that the young guys on D for OSU have gotten better by leaps and bounds throughout the year.

All-American status is a year long accomplishment, so obviously the sophomore studs like Apple and Bell don't stack up given early year bumps.

However, in terms of where they are playing now, and more importantly where they are capable of playing next Monday, I think it's much closer than you are giving them credit for.

A huge part of this is learning and growing in Ash's new system. The team and all the players (especially the younger guys, including Bosa) are clearly more comfortable and playing more assignment sound today than even a few weeks ago.

They are peaking at the right time, and IMO the early season struggles (and lack of All-American status and who would start throughout the year) aren't overly relevant when talking about how they're playing now and how they match up on Monday night.
