Game Thread 2015 National Championship Game: (2) Oregon vs. (4) Ohio State, Jan 12th @ 8:30p ET, ESPN

The ducks have a nice o line albiet smaller and although they are tall on the defensive line if we can go for 300 rushing on Bama does anyone realize how much easier it'll seem for our boys up front? We have massacred 4 top ten defenses a number 14 defense and also tech at 18. Half of our schedule has been ranked in the top 20 for fuck sakes.

Now here comes Oregon at 84 without their best DB... haha ok sure...

There's a reason they're 84th in total defense and its not because they're just as talented upfront... the exact opposite infact.

Bottom line FSU fucked themselves with turnovers and gave them short fields all game for easy scores. We will force them to drive 80 yards just like we did in 09 and we will run the ball and play keep away.

The difference? Unlike FSU who isn't half as good on the oline we will punch the ball in.

Dontre, jalin, zeke, samuel, and Cardale... yeah good luck holding us under 300 rushing. I said before the bama game I thought we matched up best with oregon and I still feel that way.

As said limit the turnovers and it'll turn out great for us

From one of the Duck sites posted earlier:

Oregon's record vs teams ranked AP #1 or #2

0-19-1

My game analysis: No OSU turnovers the Buckeyes win. Also, from watching a few of Oregon's games the past 10/15 years, assume every Oregon punt is a fake punt no matter what the field position.

My conundrum: Watched the entire WI game and OSU won 59-0. Didn't watch the 'Bama game and OSU won. In fact, still haven't watched as I'm waiting for the torrent.

All good things to those who wait ...

Their Dline? Not so much.
How about this line?

The national media will tell us who will win this game, and we can take what they say to the bank - although not in the way they think.

Late August: Braxton Miller goes down. Declaration - Ohio State is screwed. There goes their shot at B1G and playoff.

Early September: Loss to Va Tech at home as the capper to a bad day for the B1G. Ohio State and the B1G are officially dead.

Early November: Ohio State is an underdog at Sparty. No way they can win that one.

Mid to late November: That Va Tech loss is an albatross around OSU's neck that they will not be able to shake off no matter how well they play because they don't play anyone.

Late November: Win over Michigan comes at the cost of Barrett. It's over. We don't know who the 3rd guy is but Wisconsin is going to beat Ohio State because we want them to and because you can't get a QB ready for that big of a game against the #2 defense in the country in that short of time.

Early December: OK we can't ignore 59-0, so we will let you in the playoff, but you are going to get embarassed by Bama. Jones was never under any real pressure in the B1G CG. You give Saban and Smart a month to figure out how to rattle a 3rd string QB in his 2nd start, and they are going to throw the kitchen sink at him and there will be no way he and the OL will be able to handle that. Plus, you will not be able to run against Bama, so it will all come down to whether Jones will be able to throw the ball down field - and, obviously, he won't be able to do that against a superior SEC team. So, congrats for making it to the semifinals, but your role is to give someone for Bama to play to tune them up for Oregon.

Early January: Wow. OK you had a great night against Bama. For some reason, they didn't play well, but now you are facing what we all feel has been the best team in America. No, we didn't say that, but we all knew it. We just felt that we couldn't go against the SEC supremity narrative, but now we are free to tell you that Oregon is playing on a different plane than Ohio State. The Buckeyes will not be able to handle the speed of the Oregon skill players. And seriously, do you expect us to believe that a 3rd string QB in only his 3rd start ever is going to be able to win a national championship? And did you see that Oregon defense dominate an undefeated, defending national champ in FSU? Then you add in that Marcus Mariota is perfection personified at the QB position. He doesn't make any mistakes, and he certainly will not/cannot make any next Monday. He cannot be stopped, or even contained. No, this could end up with the Buckeyes being humiliated. If Ohio State can just keep it close, they should feel good about themselves.

... which is why I know what is going to happen next Monday.

ESPN just called. They love your work. You start on Monday.

This is my opinion as well. Oregon has to play a perfect game on offense against a very good defense to win. We should be able to throw deep at will if they stack the box, run at will if they don't, and win comfortably if we take care of the ball.

How has Oregon changed since the last time we played them? IIRC our lines controlled the LoS in that game. I would expect both of our lines to be better than they were back then, but I don't know how the Ducks compare. I haven't watched much of Oregon this year, but going in I would expect our inside running game to be better than it was last night. I think we match up better with a speed team than a power team, but I get the feeling this is going to be a shootout.

The Ducks are a bit bigger and a lot stronger on both lines than they have been in the past. Coach Helfrich wanted our linemen to be bigger without losing any quickness, so they underwent an offseason regimen of weight training and diet. Some guys have added up to 10 pounds of muscle and it's showing in the last few games.

We're a much different team than we were when we faced you guys in the Rose Bowl in 2010. As I mentioned already, we're more solid in the trenches and Mariota is light years better than Jeremiah Masoli was at QB. We still have two excellent running backs in Royce Freeman and Thomas Tyner. Tyner and Dontre Wilson stayed in contact for awhile after Dontre almost came to Oregon before flipping to Ohio State. I don't know if they still are or not? Not this week, I'm sure. Lol

We're an opportunistic defense. We've grown leaps and bounds over the last half of the season, only giving up 17.5 points per game. We lost All-American CB, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, but the secondary is still very talented.

Regarding the two losses to Arizona, I've heard that mentioned already more than once, so I thought I'd try to address them. The first game (last year) they beat us - plain and simple. Mariota was playing on a bum knee, which obviously affected our offense. Still, they ran all over us. It was just one of those days where if something could go wrong, it did. Kudos to them. No excuses. We got whooped.

This year's game we were without our top 4 offensive tackles. Two guys were lost for the season in fall camp, including our stud left tackle, Tyler Johnstone, and then our two other guys were injured in the Michigan State and Wyoming games. We were starting a true freshman at left tackle and a redshirt junior walk-on on the right for both the Washignto State and Arizona games. I think Mariota was sacked 12 times total over those two games. It was ugly. I'm so glad he wasn't seriously injured.

Still, we'd held Arizona to a FG attempt late in the 4th Qtr of that game with the score tied 24-24, but one of our star players, Tony Washington, made the stop on 3rd down and then ran all the way out to the 40 yard line and took a bow to the crowd. He got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, Arizona got a 1st down inside our 5 yard line and scored a TD 3 plays later. We were driving the ball for the game tying TD with two minutes left when Bednarik, Lombardi and Nagurski award winner, Scooby Wright (I HATE THAT GUY!) hit Mariota's arm, caused a fumble and recovered it. Game over.

We got redemption in the Pac-12 championship game, though. As far as Arizona losing to Boise State goes, that was a fluke. They're a much better team than that. Kudos to Boise State, but UA blew it.

I've watched a few Ohio State games this year, though not the entire games. They've had their good days and bad, as well. I saw the end of Virginia Tech, watched the second half of the Penn State game and watched most of the Michigan and Minnesota games. I watched a little bit of the Big-10 championship game, but that got out of hand after awhile, so I switched to another game.

I think the two teams are pretty evenly matched and I expect a close game. I'm concerned about your running game. Elliott is an outstanding back. Of course, we have a 4 headed approach. Between Freeman, Tyner, Mariota and Byron Marshall, we have a lot of options.

The coaching matchup will be interesting, as well. Both Urban Meyer and Mark Helfrich are outstanding offensive minded individuals, that are friends, and have also traded a lot of secrets. It'll be interesting to see if we make any noticeable changes offensively.

I don't know much about your offensive coordinator, but ours, Scott Frost, has a lot of experience that includes a national championship at Nebraska and 6 years in the NFL.

I have customers in Ohio that are huge Buckeye fans, so this game could affect my well being all year long if my Ducks win. Lol

Here's to a good game that's injury free and not decided by the officials.

Good luck!

Go Ducks!!! :-)

Hey guys, I rarely ever post but read the forum about everyday. I just wanted to say that while I am glad Ohio State is yet an underdog again because that seems to be working for us, I find it amazing that is the case after just beating the big bad #1 ranked Tide. I also find it funny that after every team Ohio State plays everyone is quick to say how bad that team is but before they play it is always how amazing they are. Isn't that interesting how that trend goes? I know this is something that we have had to deal with for a long time but do you think it will change if we beat the Ducks convincingly or do you think everyone will talk about how overrated they were as well?

First and foremost, Oregon is fast as shit. Not just 40 time fast but everything they do is amped up. It causes confusion and serious fatigue. The announcers and camera men are often caught with their pants down while they are taking off. Keeping every play in front of us and being very well rested for this game is going to be very important.

Our strategy is twofold. Run it like hell and don't turn it over as Jax has mentioned several times already. Turnovers ended up equal in the last game but we turned it over in our own end twice and they scored 14 points off of it. Can't happen and win this next game.

We'll be able to run because we haven't been stopped yet. I have to believe that will continue because we do have the threat of the pass and several weapons in the passing game. It'll be pick your poison, much as I imagine it will be for us.

Our special teams should be better than theirs. Johnston is awesome even in the face of that crazy bounce his punt got last game and our ridiculous non-adjustment to Ray Guy punting for Alabama. I got a feeling Dontre will be back for this one and that should give us some more depth on special teams.

Hit Mariota as many times as possible. I don't see Joey Bosa being as quiet as he was in the last game. The trick is not letting Mariota run for a 3rd down conversion when we have everyone covered. Get off the field on 3rd down and get a breather when it's available. Everything else should take care of itself.

I like that they don't have a guy like Henry... really struggled with those big power backs all season. (Thank you Kiffin for going away from him)
Defense has been able to contain Coleman and Gordon for long stretches and get off the field -- Freeman and Tyner seem to be in that same mold.
Haven't seen a QB like Mariota though, and I can already see him ripping off some big scrambles.
Haven't seen anything like their HUNH either. But our defense doesn't sub a ton anyway. Need to make sure the offense possesses the ball enough to keep them rested.

I used to do a lot of business in Seattle and got to know quite a few UW alums, and to a person, they say Oregon fan is hokeing intolerable and act like college football didn't exist before Daddy Phil bought them a program. I think they're pretty universally loathed around the PAC and Northwest.

Definitely hated in the PNW.
Oregon are ever so Great Gatsby ... no actual success, but suddenly Nike cash falls from the sky and they think they're above everyone else. So many bandwagon fans came out of the wordwork around 2007-2009 too. I can't remember seeing any Oregon stuff circa 2006 when I moved, suddenly it was everywhere with the false bravado.
There's also a perspective in Seattle towards Oregon/Portland comparable to how we view PSU -- they ever so desperately want to be Seattle's rival. But no. Seattle would rather see SanFran or somewhere else as their equal. Portland and Oregon are beneath them. A place you go for strippers and hippies living in Bohemian depravity (as opposed to the high-minded & organized liberal bourgeois of SanFran / Seattle).

That's what people were saying about Massoli until tOSU rolled him. Mariotta seems like a high quality and character kid but I wouldn't sell the farm for him just yet. I would take him over Winston on character alone.

I think he's rather under-rated as a passer b/c people see Oregon, that offense, and highlight reels of him running... he's got moves like Brax but also outstanding throwing it and makes very few mistakes.
Been hearing for years about "the next Russell Wilson"... with the media pining especially for Johnny Turnover. IMO Mariota could actually be another QB like Wilson in the NFL. He's proven he doesn't depend on running or ad-libbing, doesn't make stupid mistakes, and he's coachable/puts work in... his running athleticism is just another weapon in the arsenal. It's not the weapon.
