2015-16 Ohio State Quarterback Discussion

If Miller isn't injured we don't lose to VT and we're absolutely killing everyone else. JT is not going "light up" MSU, despite MSU no longer having their "no fly zone" secondary. And JT is still learning to lead...did you see Meyer screaming at him "Take charge!", twice?
I did see that but I think we all know leadership wise JT is a good one. The take charge by Urban has nothing to do with his on the field performance. I never said he would light up MSU but my point is IF he does then he will be playing QB next year and if we get worked like against tech then he will not. If JT performes well against a good defense like MSU then that'll be something he holds over Braxtons head

We have debated that Va Tech game to death and we all know the play calling, The offensive line, and some big drops didn't help JT. In saying that yes we do win that game with Braxton I agree. My suspicion isn't JTs progress now but it is by seasons end. After all he has 2 300 yard game's and is still learning. Again against poor competition but he has put up 250+ yards in 3 of the 4 games with the other being 220 (could've been much higher if we can catch the ball against tech) and that's a aspect that BM has really been delayed in developing

It has a lot to do with overall performance lest Meyer would not have popped a gasket over it.

So, if a kid with eight career games goes into MSU and wins he'll be the starter next year over the two-time B1G POY who has 30+ career starts? I like Barrett's upside as much as anyone but me thinks you should get out of the Barrett Koolaid swimming pool...

how many back-to-back 300 yard passing games has Braxton had?
in fact, how many 300 yard passing games has Braxton had at all?

Brax best performance was against Ped State last year. A 252 yard effort. Is that right? Wow! How lame!
Oh, wait! There is that 2 time Big Player of the Year thang.
Meh. Not impressed! Happens all the time.

If you're going to count Barrett's 300-yard passing games against defensive juggernauts like Kent State and Cincinnati as ammo in your argument that Barrett is currently a better passer than Miller was, then you may need to come back with something more valid. Miller does hold the school record for 300-yard total offense games (10).

He certainly isn't as good now as he will be by seasons end but IF JT is able to maintain his progress the rest of the season it will be JT a. It's a big if and the game to watch is MSU because if he lights up a MSU team (which will have a week to prepare) then it'll be hard to put Braxton back out there. As dynamic as Braxton is he has never put up even half way great passing stats against poor teams while JT is lighting them up.

Lets not forget that JT also has a brand new offensive line and no Carlos Hyde either. I feel that we relied on Braxton and Carlos because it was a strength but I also feel we did so because we just couldn't throw the ball. If anything that killer of a rushing thread should have made our play action offense lethal yet not so much.

I love Braxton but if JT is going to hit 6-9 different receivers a game and get the ball down field then I'm just not sure we could go back to Braxton. JT can run too don't forget. Maybe not as well as Braxton obviously but to win CHAMPIONSHIPS we need the QB of our teams to be able to do both. So far both JT and Braxton have failed against every great defense. JTs next shot is against MSU we will know then who next year's qb will be

He is a better passer IMO, better overall? No not at this time but like I said at the end the year if he manages some big numbers with a very inexperienced offense then imagine what he can do with 4 returning offensive lineman, starting tailback, and 4 of his top 6 WRs. I'm not saying he will get the job if we simply beat MSU but if he throws up 280+ passing yards while keeping our playmakers involved then I feel that's something Braxton hasn't been able to do in his career which is throw on a elite defense.

Either way it's a good problem to have and me personally if JT continues on this pace then I'd prefer his decent running ability, good facilitation skills, and good passing over a freak athlete. However I'm not urban and either way our team is set up next year extremely nice.

I can agree with this. I see Barrett as a Guiton V2 right now, only that he's playing the whole season "interim" vice a few games at a time like Guiton did. I think Miller is the starter next year, but at the first sign of his struggling or, heaven forbid, another injury, Barrett can jump right back in without any loss of continuity.

Granted, we're only talking about Kent and UC, but in those games the offense has run more fluidly and effectively than it did with Braxton (even against gimme opponents, i.e. Buffalo) and the offense looked best overall with Guiton running things last year (admittedly against inferior teams). It seems to me that JT fits the overall offensive gameplan better. Will it go sideways as the competition improves? I hope not but that's certainly possible. Is Braxton a better athlete? Of course. Would we have beaten VT with him at qb? Absolutely. Would a two-qb system work next year? Yes, I believe it could with these two guys.

how many 300 yard passing games did Miller have in his first four starts? oh, that's right, zero. his career best is 252.
i'll give you Braxton being a better athlete. that's not a question.
but JT Barrett is a better passer.

stats through first four starts under Urban: we'll leave 2011 out of it, because the numbers would be overwhelmingly in Barrett's favor.

passing: Miller, 754; Barrett, 1087
percentage: Miller, 61.2; Barrett, 63.6
rushing: Miller, 441; Barrett, 205
total yards: Miller, 1195; Barrett 1292
total touchdowns: Miller, 14; Barrett, 14

2011 first four starts just for fun:
rushing: 181, 0 TDs
passing: 251, 4 TDs
total: 432, 4 TDs.

When looking at their stats in fantasy value, Miller totaled 140 points while Barrett has 112 points. It's much easier to rack up stats through the air than on the ground, so naturally JT should appear to be doing just as well as Braxton had through four games under Urban. But their skill sets are different and how they add value to the offense is different.

What pace do you guys see? I told my dad after the Cinci game that, if he were to give me a million dollars for guessing within 100 of how many passing yards JT had, I would have lost a million dollars. That was not a 300 yard passing performance. That was the Ezekiel Elliott/Offensive Line show, with JT as a supporting actor. It was also a terribad defense. Assuming no ill-effects from the injury, and assuming Braxton comes back to play QB, there's no way JT gets the nod over him unless JT gets A LOT better. That's not saying he's bad. But he's still running a training wheel offense, and he missed quite a few wide open guys last Saturday when things were getting tight.

I get the feeling that he is only allowed to throw deep when he's told it's OK for this specific play to go deep.....and he doesn't have the ability yet to read the defense and see that Dontre Wilson is streaking down the field with the closest defender 8 yards behind him. Otherwise, he's getting credit for passing yards on screens and that play where Dontre or Jalin Marshall run in front of him and he flicks it forward.

Can't believe you are going to discredit a 45-1st down performance by a RS freshman QB. How was JT a supporting actor when he and the play calling are the primary reason that Cincy couldn't commit to stopping anything. JT is dissecting the defense and getting the ball out of his hand so quick that it's paying dividends in YAC's and spreading out the defense out so the run game works even better. He didn't go deep because he didn't have to. Why go deep when you are killing them underneath. It did set up to late passes over the top but I'm amazed at what this passing facet is bringing to our offense.

Not even the same circumstances. Miller was thrown into the starting job as a true freshman five games into the 2011 season against much better competition, so yeah, the numbers would be overwhelmingly in Barrett's favor. Miller didn't throw much in 2012 or 2013 because of Carlos Hyde providing a huge chunk of the offense (along with Miller's running ability). Barrett has to pass more this year because of the drop-off in running talent (maybe by the end of this season Elliot may be close to Hyde in running production).

I'll give you that Barrett is a better passer in his second year in the program as was Miller was at the same point. But, Miller isn't at the same experience level as Barrett--he's far ahead. In Miller's first five games back from injury last year--against better competition--he went 91-125-2 (73%) passing for 1,108 yards and 13 TDs. I'll take a 13/2 TD/INT and 74% completion any day. So he's shown he can return after an absence without missing a beat. Barrett will be an outstanding backup next year and will probably play a lot more than did Guiton did behind Miller. Still, Miller is The Man.
