They had to fire him, as "Michigan Men" were dominant negative recruiters undermining him at every turn. The reality is Michigan simply doesn't spend to hire top coaches. They always get budget, sleeper or familiar hires. Sometimes it works out (Beilein, Bo), often times it does not.

There's also the pesky matter of defense being extinct under RR.

After RR, no top candidate who doesn't fit the whole "Michigan Man" thing will touch the job. That pretty much leaves them to swing for the Harbaugh/Miles fence. They won't do that because they won't pay for it and Pizza Man's ego won't allow a coach bigger (not in a Hoke way) than himself in any event. They'll end up getting Hoke 2.0: a second tier "Michigan Man" and hope that they catch lightening in a bottle. The hilarious irony in the whole thing is that their greatest coaching hire was the epitome of the non-Michigan Man. They essentially went out and hired Woody Jr. and the guy most thought was his heir apparent. Stupid Michigan Man.
