The leak is beneficial to both sides. Now Hairball and his agent have a pricey carrot to dangle over the NFL franchise's heads, and scUM shows their fanbase/alumni they made every effort to get their guy.
It's still going to end in tears for scUM fan, though. NFL teams, particularly likely high-revenue suitors like Oakland, Chicago, and the Jets will be slightly amused by that offer and have no trouble beating it.
Here's how I expect it to go down--after the season ends on December 29, SF will reach out to the interested teams and say he's available for trade. At that point, a bidding war will ensue in regards to compensation for the Niners. The winning "bid" will negotiate with Hairball, and once an extension is agreed upon, a trade will be announced.
Hairball will say all the right things about scUM and their offer, but he just doesn't want to leave the NFL and his SuperBowl dream. scum's fanbase will have a nuclear meltdown, but find some comfort in that they made their best effort this time. Now, I do not know how engaged they are in lining up a Plan-B, we obviously know about the search firm. However, the longer they wait, the more time it gives schools like UCLA, Miss State, etc. to lock up their guys with extensions. I know Miles has said he's not leaving LSU, but you gotta think he'd take that job in a heartbeat. Question is, is the anti-Les "faction" there still strong enough to kill that.
