Kind of like waiting for a phone call back from that hot sorority chick you just asked out.
I hope Herbstreit leaks it and the guy comes out and says that he isn't going to Michigan, and Michigan has to get the next RichRod.
Sam Webb: If I had to guess, it's still Harbaugh
No link, since he said it on air 10 minutes ago. Just thought that was interesting since his sources yesterday said no. Edit: He did say it would be harder than originally thought because of how many NFL jobs will likely open up. Bacon was also on the air with him and agrees Harbaugh is the best guess at the moment.
Webb is the worst. He often has good info, but he's more concerned with pacifying his subscribers. Even when the walls are crashing down, he'll still do his best to work in a positive angle. Look no further than the Malik McDowell saga last winter.
It was all based on that Detroit News article with the sensational headline. Nothing groundbreaking. The scUM insiders are going to continue to pump positive Harbaugh info until the bitter end with qualifiers attached for plausible deniability. But, if you notice, as time goes on, they're slowly dialing back the optimism. I get it, he's the guy everybody wants, and you don't add new subscribers by saying "guys, it's a real longshot", or "he's not coming here, but here's some guys that might"...but the way the fans are lapping it up is humorous. They better at least get a decent plan b, or it's going to be ugly. At this point, it's setting up like anybody but Harbaugh or Miles will lead to much teeth gnashing. You can forget Stoops, Malzahn, or any of the other pie in the sky names too. I wouldn't be surprised if it's somebody like Gundy or Mora, neither of which would be awful, but certainly not "luster restored" kind of hires either. I think those guys could get scUM to where they wanted Hoke to...that being 9-10 wins a year on average, with the occasional run at a conference title.Webb tweeted out a link to scout yesterday with the headline "Is Lloyd Carr blocking Jim Harbaugh from coaching Michigan?" or something like that. Then you click on the link and it's a premium article trying to get you to pay. What a joke.
and of course the he was quoting from a free article in the Detroit News or something where Carr said Harbaugh would be his number 1 choice.
The thing is, I'm not sure there are any "Next Tressels" out there. How many times has a relatively obscure DII coach landed a premier job and had extraordinary success? I can't think of anybody. Besides, one reason JT was so successful, is that he was from Ohio. He "got" what Ohio State football was about, and he won by selling Ohio State football again to the kids/coaches in his talent-rich home state. It was a perfect storm that I'm not sure will ever be replicated. To quote 'The Big Lebowski' (slightly modified)--A school like TSUN should be able to find the next Tressel. But instead I expect them to land a retread. They could have done what Florida did, but they didn't.
