2014 MLB Playoffs Discussion

So the Giants were "2012 World Series Champions" in 2010, 2012,and 2014. That is amazing.

But in all seriousness...is anyone else perplexed why the official scorer completely made up his own rule to award Bumgarner the win. When the starting pitcher leaves without the lead (before or after five) the pitcher of record when the team took the lead gets the win. The only exception is if the pitcher was ineffective and his appearance was brief. I hardly call Affeldt's 2+ innings of one hit ball brief or ineffective.

ummm Bumgardner has a save, not the win. The win went to Affeldt.

I actually wondered that too. However, they changed it 50 minutes after the game.

Madison Bumgarner gets longest save in World Series history

Madison Bumgarner will have to settle for the longest save in World Series history rather than a Game 7 win.

Bumgarner was originally credited by the official scorers with the win after throwing five innings of shutout relief to close out San Francisco's 3-2 victory over Kansas City on Wednesday night.

After consulting with the Elias Sports Bureau, Bumgarner was credited with the save instead and reliever Jeremy Affeldt got the win for his first career Series decision. The change was announced about 50 minutes following the final out.

That gave Bumgarner the save as the finishing pitcher in the victory. The previous longest save in Series history since it became an official stat in 1969 was a 3 2-3 inning stint by Steve Howe in the Game 6 clincher for the Dodgers against the Yankees in 1981. Lefty Grove would have gotten a 4 1-3 inning save in Game 2 in 1929 for the Philadelphia Athletics against the Chicago Cubs under the current rules.

A man jumps over some debris that has been set on fire in the Mission district after the San Francisco Giants beat the Kansas City Royals to win the World Series on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, in San Francisco.

Yeah, that was nonsense -- I'm glad they changed that.
