2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil

BVistahC;2348374; said:
With the heavy protests in Brazil during the Confederations Cup these two weeks (over next summer's World Cup, the government and other things), the Brazilians are really going to like the Olympics in a few years.

Just over the past 20-25 years, normally the Olympics operate at a heavier cost or loss than hosting the World Cup.

First thing that popped into my head when I saw OHSports had booked his trip... it really is the "and other things" that are the problem... and I'm not talking bus fares. Usually when Brazilians are rioting, apparently, they want big changes...

I'm not up on my UEFA upsets, but the bolded teams have no business leading their groups correct? These seem like significant upsets.

They got booted from AFC in '74 after there fellow neighbors, namely the Arabic nations refused to play them. You can imagine the animosity that would stem from some of those games after several wars, so they went back-and-forth with qualifying through Europe & Oceania, until '94 when they became a permanent member of UEFA.

Bosnia & Herzegovina are a great team, so don't let the name fool you. They've just barely missed out on qualifying for the last two major tournaments (WC '10 & EURO '12), losing to Portugal both times in the two-legged playoff.

Montenegro is the real surprise, but they also have some quality players in there team. You can't take any team for granted in Europe, as they can beat you on any given night, unless they're the Faroe Islands, San Marino, Andorra, etc. or any of the other very small countries.

Apparently Azerbaijan does have a case for being in Europe.

According to Wikipedia: Europe is generally divided from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas. The northeastern Azerbaijan district borders run mostly along the main Caucasus watershed. Five districts are entirely within Europe, and the transcontinental Khizi district is almost equally divided on the two sides of the watershed.

And don't ask me to explain it.

Sweden is the only team guaranteed a spot in the play-off round as a group runner up. Groups F, G, H & I are still yet to be determined, however, Russia and Spain are in tremendous position to win Groups F & I and directly qualify.

Some notable games to keep an eye on when group stage qualification commences on Tuesday October 15th:
Group A - Croatia @ Scotland (Croatia need points to assure themselves a spot in the play-off round).
Group B - Every single one. This group is completely up in the air in terms of who will finish in second place, but this is likely to be the group where second place won't make it to the play-off round because they won't have enough points to be one of the best eight group runners-up.
Group D - Every single one. Another group completely up in the air in terms of who will finish in second.
Group E - Slovenia @ Switzerland & Iceland @ Norway. Slovenia have an uphill battle being one point behind Iceland and going to already qualified Switzerland, but Iceland have a tough task going to Norway as well being up only a point on Slovenia.
Group F - Russia @ Azerbaijan & Luxembourg @ Portugal. Russia need just one point and they win the group, while Portugal need Russia to lose and to score quite a few goals to catch up on goal differential.
Group G - Liechtenstein @ Greece & Bosnia and Herzegovina @ Lithuania. Whoever gets more points from these two games between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Greece wins the group. Bosnia and Herzegovina have an insurmountable lead on goal differential so if it finishes tied on points, they win the group and qualify directly.
Group H - Every single one. Montengro realistically don't have a chance, but they technically do to finish second if some outrageous events occur. England with only a one point advantage get Poland at home, while Ukraine go to pointless San Marino, so realistically England are probably going to need three to win the group and qualify directly.
Group I - Both. Spain only need one point at home against Georgia and they win the group & qualify directly. France get Finland at home, but have no chance to win the group if Spain gets at least one point, which is probably not going to happen.
