2014 FIFA World Cup - Brazil

I am little confused, could you please quote the comment?

oops screwed up the multi-quote...

it was this one:

American football has its own version of flopping. When defensive players fake injuries to slow down a high tempo offenses. Is that not basically the same as flopping and diving?

I'm not really sure of the point - I wasn't trying to say people don't flop in the NFL, although that seems to be a more recent trend. Soccer has always had the stigma.

Further up thread was a lot about talk of diving. It was being used as a primary reason to dislike the sport. I was just making a general point that this kind of gamesmanship exists in all professional sports. I was just using the NFL, because it is the sport most people would be familiar with. It was never in response to any poster in particular.

I didn't see your edit about the fines for diving until now. They will yellow card dives and will be fined afterwards. Multiple infractions will result in a suspension of up to three games.

This is what I'm talking about when it comes to that vocal minority. You're comparing it directly to "American Football" when no one has really done so.

No one, and certainly not me, is defending football players when they flop compared to soccer players when they do it. However, you don't see someone in the NFL go down and flop like an Italian soccer player (if you catch my drift and see the connection) without being roundly criticized and fined in some cases.

It's a stigma against soccer as a sport. Unfortunately time and again we see the players confirm the stigma with their actions.

Edit to add: In the NBA, the flopping got so bad that they had to institute fines and eventually technical fouls and suspensions. Have they done that in soccer? I somehow doubt it.

Seriously. If you're even asking the question - well, don't - just give in and watch it. Enjoy the moment. This is happening now, in real life, the big soccer thing and the USA is in it. Do it!

Sorry. I was trying to decide whether to try again.

Enjoy. If the USA does well, I'll be happy whether I understand the game or not.

Well, its the right time to try again. I can't make you like broccoli or stinky cheese or anything else.

These guys here will be talking about what matches are coming up that excite them, if you want to spend the time and focus on it, you might get sucked in, you might not. But this tournament is fun because while the first round isn't one and done, like chasing a MNC in football or the NCAA tournament, you need a good result pretty much every game to advance. I'd try to watch the US and see wha upset there are in the early matches and latch on to an underdog. Some people don't need a rooting interest, but I find it helps. (Though, I've been known to switch in the middle of games.)

This isn't in regards to any of OSUK's posts, but it amazes me how many people I've seen on social media commenting on articles saying something to the tune of "Don't care," "Boring," "Wake me up when the real football season starts." Like that's OK that you feel that way, but why even say anything? You literally can't bear coverage for one month every four years? Jesus.
I saw a touching "in memorium" article about a childhood friend of the family that just passed away, talking about all of the things she had done in the short time for the city she lived in. People felt the need to post comments like, and I quote "Never heard of her". OK, great, you didn't know her...does anybody fucking care? No, but people feel the need to comment anyway...
