2014-15 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I have a trivia question for you all. When was the last season when OSU had 3 or more scholarship seniors on the team who had been at OSU for 4 years and failed to get 1,000+ career points?

I tried to look it up myself, but all I can find through the past 15+ years is teams with 2 such seniors. The most recent being Matta's first season, 2004-2005, which featured Brandon Fuss-Cheatham and Matt Marinchick. Of course I came upon this question because this team most likely will have 4 seniors that fit in the category of being at OSU for 4 years and not getting 1,000 career points.

I could totally see this team blowing a game or two it shouldn't down the stretch - either to scUM, Nebby or the Pedsters - beating Purdue at home and having their entire tournament life come down to the Big Ten Tourney and/or beating Wisconsin.

Even under the worse of the two scenarios you posit (i.e., OSU blows two out of the scUM, Nebby and PSU games) but wins the other one and beats Purdue, then OSU would be 21-9 (10-7). And even if they then lose to UW and lose in the first round of the BTT, they will have finished 21-11 (10-8). They're in with that.

In short, they could do exactly what you said, and still "their entire tournament life" will not come down to the BTT or the UW game. People don't seem to realize just how ridiculously soft the bubble has become with the expansion to 68 teams. Some real garbage teams get in every year now--teams much worse than the Bucks this year, even if they finish as you speculate.

I think that they get in, but barely. They are extremely fragile and unlikely to go very far unless they play their best game from the opening tip to the last second. I don't think that they have done that yet this year. My frustration at watching the clangers off the free throw line meant a game of self-moderation. They have so much ability and I remain hopeful.

We'll see I guess....Maybe I'm a little worried Russell is hitting the freshman wall and the rest of this team just isn't good enough collectively to win without him being what he can be.....

They can't win two games in a row versus top 60 teams..so they will be out on the first weekend anyway. Russell with these srs is like Jordan when he came to the Bulls ..they can't keep up with him. Russell throws a great passs to the post..they either fumble it or blow the dunk. If you cannot finish at rim you better work on FT's. Thompson Mc Donald and Amir.

Sorry bucksin07, if they come crawling to the finish line 10-8 in the conference and 21-11 overall, with that weak non-con schedule and having not beaten anyone with a pulse on the road, that might make them NIT bound. Do I see that happening.....NO, but I do think if you paint that exact scenario they would be headed to the NIT not the NCAA tourney.

That would put them probably in the 6th, 7th or maybe even 8th slot (if IU, IL and/or Iowa go over .500 the rest of the way) in the big 10 and I don't see more than 6 making it in from the conference, LOSERS OF 5 OF THEIR LAST 7 and having one of the weakest resumes to stand on (non-con and lack of quality wins) of many of the bubble teams. Finishing in the top 5 of the Big 10 and winning at least one conference tourney game assures them a ticket but let's hope they don't flirt with a 10-8 conference record and a 1st round exit from the conference tourney. Like you said, with the bubble super soft this year, I don't want it in the committees hands.

I think an 11-7 regular season conference record and at least one "w" in the conference tourney is realistic. This team can't seem to string a stretch of good games together and have been up and down all year long. I think OSU fans are going to be very disappointed in OSU's seeding come tournament time barring a deep run in the Big 10 tournament, which they are accustomed to and capable of making.

Even with the bad non-conference schedule, I don't think there's any way OSU doesn't make the tourney with a 10-8, 21-11 record.

I don't think Russell is hitting a wall, he's just played against a couple teams playing especially tough defense against him. He could play better, yes, but I don't think the last 2 games are an indication that he will continue to struggle from the field every game.

We'll see - I'm not buying that Ped State played him tough...they didn't play anyone tough that night. Sparty maybe....

Can still get a top 4 seed in the Big 10 tournament I think if Ohio State wins out. That will be needed as well if Ohio State doesn't want an 8 or lower seed in the NCAA tournament.

Anything short of winning 4 straight they would need to get deep in the Big 10 tourney or your looking at an 8+ seed in the NCAA tournament.

Just nothing on the resume for road wins this year.

IU, Purdue and Maryland are their ONLY 3 impressive wins of the season. If they don't beat Wisconsin at the end of the season, buckeye737 and buckeyesin07, how are you so convinced they belong in? I watch a ton of college basketball and am as big a Buckeye homer as there is, but like I said back on Feb 17th: 21-11 means they lost 5 of their last 7, probably entered the Big 10 tourney as the 6 or 7 seed in a down big 10 conference this year, lost in the 1st rd of the conference tourney to another bad team. Sure, they might only have 1 bad loss (*ichigan) now but add a loss to Neb or PSU to that resume with 0 quality non-con wins, 0 quality road wins and only 3 good wins on their entire resume. Even with a soft bubble, that isn't tourney worthy.

Again, don't get me wrong, I do think they will win a couple more games to sneak in and end up a 9 or 10 seed, but two or three more losses down the stretch with who they have left, and a 21-11 finish, would get them an NIT invite IMHO.

We haven't even beaten Purdue yet.
