2013 Week 6 B1G FB Open Thread

My picks:
Penn State at Indiana: Christian Hackenberg has been impressive this year, while Indiana has underwhelmed. Penn State's only loss was by 3 points to a pretty damn good UCF team, while the Hoosiers have blown out an FCS team and Bowling Green. Indiana may put up a lot of points, but I think PSU can match them. Nittany Lions by 5.

Illinois at Nebraska: I would definitely take Illinois against the spread and was tempted to even take them straight up here, but the fact that this game is in Lincoln is the deciding factor for me. Plus, Nebraska is coming off a bye week. Scheelhasse has put up big numbers but he's due to come down back to earth. NU by 6.

Michigan State at Iowa: Iowa has only dropped one game against a really good NIU team in the first week of the season. They've built a little bit of momentum since then. It'll be interesting to see how MSU looks coming out of the bye week. They really need to get the passing game going (113th in the nation) to complement that rock-solid defense. Hawkeyes by 6.

Minnesota at Michigan: The Wolverines have looked all but impressive so far and could really have two losses on their schedule. The reality is Minnesota is just flat out terrible, and I expect Michigan to recoup after their bye and win relatively easily in the Big House. Wolverines by 10.

Ohio State at Northwestern: A really, really good matchup. Northwestern will be all jacked up what with Gameday and all. HOWEVER, championship caliber teams tend to overcome that. Northwestern may be in for a bit of a rude awakening here. This might be a preview of the Big Ten Championship Game. Should be a fun one in Evanston, but I think OSU rains on the parade. Buckeyes by 7.

Not seeing by 6. I see Illinois winning by two touches. Until I see the defense actually stop SOMEBODY, I will be picking against my Huskers, unfortunately.

Come on....Buckeyes by 7? Not seeing that either. You guys should win by two touches too.

FYI I start with Sagarin and then add a few points here or there as I see fit. That's why the point differentials are often a bit lower than others.

As far as Illinois-Nebraska, we will continue to see if Scheelhaase's run is for real. As of right now, I think he'll regress to the mean as the Big Ten season goes on. I could see him having a 3 or 4 INT game (I know, it's Nebraska's defense) and Illinois struggles to move the ball.

Off to Chi town in just a couple of hours. A former student and her husband live in Evanston (she's a Northwestern grad) and are hosting us for a couple of days. I'll be sitting in the midst of the home crowd so look for someone wearing an S&G rugby shirt in the midst of a sea of purple.

Still don't know what to make of this team. It seems to be boom or bust on both sides of the ball. Wonder what the loss of Bryant will mean to the defense. Still, we're talking Northwestern here. At least I hope we are. GO BUCKS!!

Sorry, Alex but I will be actively cheering against the Huskers this year. I feel a 5-6 loss year will help push Bo out as coach. I know Nebraska is capable of being a perennial 12-14 win top-10 team, and Bo's attitude is holding the program back. He's lost at least 4 games a year for the last decade, with an awful bowl record. Even more difficult now, as the big ten #2, 3, 4 teams play SEC team in SEC country. (I don't know how much that is changing) I stand by, why would recruits go play for an asshole. He holds onto the old mentality of the coach has to be a hard-ass mark may, and with the current recruiting climate that doesn't work anymore. Now coaches have to walk a line of being 'a friend' yet 'the boss'. I want Bo gone, because I want a strong Nebraska, and he's not the man. 1 terrible year can end up good in the long run.
