2013 TSUN shenanigans and arguments

Regarding #98....

Michigan's original #98 was Tom Harmon - two-time All American (1939, 1940), Heisman Trophy (1940), Maxwell Award (1940). Harmon led the nation in scoring twice, a feat that has never been duplicated; for his career, he averaged 9.9 points per game. Harmon is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, he ranked #16 on ESPN's list of greatest college football players of all time, and #5 on BTN's list of "Big Ten Icons".

After leaving Michigan, Harmon enlisted as an airman in the Army Air Corps and saw action in World War II. He was awarded both the Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

So, gridiron legend and war hero - if the term "Michigan Man" means anything outside of the fantasies of Wolverine fans, then Tom Harmon was a Michigan Man.

Now 73 years later, along comes Devin Gardner. Career passing stats: 151 for 260 (58.1%), 2,281 yards, 20 TD's, 14 INT's. Ranked 71st in the nation in passing efficiency. Ranked 119th in interceptions thrown. The definition of mediocre, and that's being charitable.

But Brady Hoke rewards (or "honors", if you prefer) Devin Gardner with Tom Harmon's #98 jersey. This is vintage Hokey, and shows how far the concept of Michigan Man has devolved. Since he arrived in Ann Arbor, Hoke has been selling recruits on the greatness of the Michigan program - the most wins all time, eleven national championships, the biggest stadium, etc. Come to Michigan and be great by association, even if you do not strive to be great yourself. Don't worry - we have plenty of greatness to go around.

If Tom Harmon was a Michigan Man, then Devin Gardner is the Michigan Trust Fund Brat who is living off the greatness of his distant predecessor. With stunts like granting the jersey of "Ole 98" to a scrub like Devin Gardner, Hoke is helping to cement the current image of Michigan Man as arrogant, entitled, and self-important. Good luck with.

I've been saying for awhile now that, ironically, the further and further away from Woody Hayes' legacy they get, the greater the fraud that is the "Michigan Man" becomes.

Schembechler stood toe to toe with Hayes because he learned everything he knew from the man and respected him.

Several degrees of separation later and Hoke's guiding philosophy on the rivalry is based around what he learned growing up a fat obnoxious UM fan in Ohio.

Bingo. Bo must be turning over in his grave--no way would his starting linebacker be a convicted felon, no way would his recruits be burning OSU offer letters and posting pictures of the same to the internet, no way would Michigan be paying skywriters to write "Go Blue" in the sky over the Michigan State game. Sadly, those shenanigans have become the norm at Brady Hoke's Michigan program.
