Didn't want to read back through the entire thread but wanted to post that which many others might (or might not) be thinking in regards to starting out #1 in the polls.
My argument as to why preseason polls can absolutely matter.
1) Whether we deserve it or not (which I agree that Bama deserves it for now)...I'd MUCH rather start out #1 than #4 for example and have three unbeatens at the end of the season and an 11-1 SEC champ to contend with for the BCS game. Even when it comes to a playoff, I'd still rather have the 1 seed if the scenario were similar. Also this gives you a "buffer ranking" in the event that your team gets leap-frogged due to a narrow victory or something of the like.
2) It's always good to remember that the higher you start off - once you've lost, the more likely it becomes that you can creep your way back into the NC picture. It's not rocket science, but I'd rather fall from 1 to 5 and be able to get back into the hunt than from 4 to 9 per se and likely be out of it.
3) Last year is a great example of why this can matter. At the end of the season, due to winning a lot of close games and having a relatively soft schedule, we might've been eeked out by the Domers and Bama for the NC. Mind you, there were a lot of dynamics that went into the final polls, but if you want to talk straight wire-to-wire, that one slot can easily be the difference.
4) Lastly, being #1 or #2 doesn't make you any more or less likely to lose than being #4, 5 or 6. People say it's too much pressure but I think most (especially ex-players from quality programs) would agree, if you're a true competitor with a winning coach, when you're out there, you're not worried about "oh no, our #1 ranking". You're worried about winning every game period. If someone chokes as soon as they get in the #1 spotlight (ORE/KSU last year), then that's likely just bad timing.
Start us as high as you like, we'll have to win them all (or all but one) to get to the big show regardless. Obviously the "better starting ranking philosophy" applies down the board because when the CFS playoff starts, it could be the difference between the #4 seed for example (IN) or the #5 (OUT).
