2013 NCAA West Regional

Honestly, I wouldn't take anyone lightly in this tournament, let alone Iowa State.

If the team comes out flat (knock on wood), Iowa State has enough of a three-point threat to pull out to a lead.

Here's hoping the team plays smart basketball with effort.

OSU definitely has a lot better personnel to match up with Iowa State than ND. With ND, you had two fairly slow and plodding big men matched up against two undersized but much quicker players with skill. And of course Connaughton couldn't guard his shadow which also hurt them big time. When you can't guard 3 of the 5 positions on the court, you will be in for a long night. What also really hurt ND is they are a 3-point shooting oriented offense, and ISU's strength defensively is guarding the 3, and they struggle at guarding teams inside the arc.

OSU will need to go small to match up with ISU, but I think that OSU is well-suited to going small. ISU's biggest player in their starting lineup is listed at 6'7" 245, and they have a couple other guys in the 6'6" and 6'7" range in their starting group. It will be interesting to see how much OSU works on getting the ball inside against this team, given their lack of shotblocking and size inside.

Just taking a quick glance at their roster we should have a length advantage which is a pretty big deal against a team that likes to shoot jump shots. How the heck did we get suck playing two of the best offensive teams in the country in the first two rounds?

You only get one easy game by virtue of a #1 or #2 seed, after that you will earn your way forward no matter where you are seeded. And nowadays with the play-in games taking effectively the 6 worst teams in the tourney out of the equation, a #15 seed could have "only" the 10th worst resume in the tourney. And of course, with a lot of these mid-majors a resume doesn't tell you how good a team is playing at the end of the year because the competition is hard to gauge.

I think Iowa State is the best #10 seed in the field, but ND wasn't a particularly good #7. This Iowa State game is huge for OSU, I think the biggest game of the year to this point no doubt. Win it and you get 4-straight S16s (would be the only team in the country to have that active streak), and the ability to possibly take advantage of a West Region where there's only one of the other top-5 seeds left. Lose and you end the year on a very disappointing note and fall short of expectations in the tourney and fail to capitalize on a golden opportunity that is the West Region. ISU is a very good offensive team, but OSU can match up with them well.

Arizona is going to advance. Harvard is awful. They didn't even look good while upsetting New Mexico.

But...but...the Mountain West is awesome! :roll1:

Yeah, Arizona ended this one in a hurry. 30-9 and still 7 minutes left in the first half.

The refs are the only thing keeping the Zags in the game. Then again, with Olynyk diving every time down the floor, it is no wonder.

It's the hair (soccer mentality).

edit: With a name like Kelly, you'd think he would try to avoid the androgynous characteristic.

Arizona is going to be headed to Los Angeles, which is the hometown of a couple of their key players. They have several players overall from CA. Will it be a road atmosphere for whoever plays Arizona in the Staples Center?
