...a place for discussion of lesser conference tournaments where we don't have a vBet.

Hard to believe it's that time of year again already. I was flipping thru channels and saw the OVC semifinals are on. There are usually a handful of great games in the bunch - just hope I don't miss 'em.

It is hard to believe that Gonzaga's playing in their conference tourney today. I do recall conferences like the MVC having their title game on the Sunday a week before Selection Sunday in the past, so it's that time. But somehow the season has been pushed back further into March. I remember having the Big Ten tourney around this date in March - in fact, the 2002 Big Ten tourney was from March 7-10. So the end of the regular season is now where the end of the conference tourneys used to be.

I missed the game, but Wright State advanced to the Horizon League final with a buzzer beater vs. Detroit. They'll face the winner of the Valpo/Green Bay game that's coming down to the wire as we speak. Home court for the final goes to the higher seed. As the no. 3 seed, they'd host the final if Green Bay advances. Valpo is the no. 1 seed.

Would love to see the Raiders back in the dance. They haven't been there since my final year of grad school, when they beat Butler in the final at the Nutter Center under Brad Brownell.

Holy shit, Valpo.

Nothing you can do about that defensively if you're Green Bay short of a steal or a block. Textbook defending on that final play, the guy just made a tough shot. The guy who missed the last free throw for GB has to feel sick right about now though.

EDIT: The I didn't miss the Wright State game I guess, in a way. It's being shown on tape delay right now on ESPNU.

Florida Gulf Coast earned their first berth in just their second season of eligibility by beating Mercer in the Atlantic Sun title game.

FGCU defeated ACC regular season champion Miami back in November. They also lost twice to Lipscomb.

As seems to happen every year we've got a losing team on the verge of grabbing a bid to the dance. Liberty (14-20) have found their way to the Big South title game where they'll take on Charleston Southern (19-11).

The A-Sun is is the conference that Northern Kentucky joined this season in moving up to D-I. According to the NKU athletic department folks I've talked to, FGCU is a program on the rise and is poised to dominate the conference in most sports. Apparently they have an attractive campus and newer, better facilities than you'd expect from a school of their size and standing. This tournament appearance for them is probably the first of several that they'll make in the coming years.

FGCU made a good move in recruiting a certain coach's daughter for their volleyball team, obviously.

You just knew it was going to happen.

Liberty wins, 87-76, punching their ticket to Dayton with 20 losses.

Missouri Valley Conference title game is always good and this year there were no upsets. Both participants - Wichita State and Creighton - are 26-7 and the loser is likely to get an at-large bid. MVC teams have pulled their share of tourney upsets in the past.

They just tipped off on CBS.

Northeastern trailed George Mason 31-7 in the first half but rallied to win 69-67 in the CAA semi finals. No magic for Mason this time.

Also FIU upset Middle Tennessee in the Sun Belt semi's, MTSU went 19-1 in conference play, their RPI is 24 according to ESPN and 28 according to Kenpom but they lack any key wins with their best win coming against Ole Miss

Hated to see Middle Tennessee fall because I think they could be a problem in the early rounds. As for Manhattan they're taking on the Iona Gaels, who underachieved in the MAAC during the season but have a chance to make amends by beating the Jaspers.
