2012 Out-of-state players to watch

RECRUITING: As an offensive lineman, Broncos' Voltz is electric :: YourSeason

BY TAYLOR BELL
October 20, 2010

Barrington's Dan Voltz has everything that college coaches look for in an offensive lineman -- size, strength, intelligence, good footwork and technique, sound fundamentals, athleticism and, perhaps most important of all, a nasty streak that belies his 4.0 grade-point average.

Voltz, a 6-5, 290-pound junior, will be one of the most highly recruited players in the nation next year, recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said.

''He has a chance to rank in a class with [Wheaton North's] Jim Juriga and [Evanston's] Mike Kenn among the best offensive tackles ever produced in Illinois -- and he has two more years to prove it,'' said Lemming, comparing Voltz to two former Big Ten and NFL standouts.

Barrington coach Joe Sanchez already compares Voltz favorably with four former Broncos stars -- Dan Doering, Dan Stevenson, Otis Hudson and Gus Handler.

He has scholarship offers from Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Arizona. He has visited Ohio State and Tennessee. He also has interest from Notre Dame, Iowa, Oregon, LSU and Alabama. He hopes to make a decision after his junior year so he can avoid distractions during his senior season.

''Growing up, Northwestern was my dream school,'' Voltz said. ''It's so close to home, I've gone to so many games and I've been to the campus a lot. Plus, the Kellogg School is the best business school in the country.

"Purdue, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Indiana, Cincinnati, Colorado, Iowa and Missouri have all offered me a scholarship." Kiel said. The D - Zone: Week 12 Game of the Week

After Dakota was moving the ball down field, #10 on Cass Tech, Royce Jenkins Stone had an interception with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter.

Did I mention Cass Tech's defense comes up with big plays? On the second play of the third quarter Royce Jenkins Stone again intercepted Morris's pass at the Dakota 19 yard line.

13 seconds later Cass Tech CB, Terry Richardson out jumped the Dakota WR and had an interception.

After a Cass Tech punt was blocked, Richardson again would come up big, matching his teammate with his second pick of the game.

Recruiting Report: District's 2012 'crop' looking good
Friday, December 03, 2010
By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The WPIAL player class of 2012 is reputed to be much better than average. Pitt is apparently trying to get ahead of the field in recruiting some of the players in that class.

Pitt already has made scholarship offers to a handful of WPIAL players who are juniors. The Panthers offered Hopewell running back

Rushel Shell when he was a freshman and he is the prized recruit in the class.

Pitt recently made scholarship offers to three other WPIAL juniors -- Central Catholic receiver-defensive back

Anthony Nixon, Montour running back Julian Durden and Clairton receiver-defensive back Trenton Coles. Pitt was the first Division I school to make offers to all three. Nixon and Durden made the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22, along with Shell.

Another WPIAL player with an offer from Pitt is Chartiers Valley quarterback-receiver

Wayne Capers. He was offered a scholarship before the start of the season but missed all but one game because of a knee injury.

Central Catholic coach

Terry Totten expects Nixon to be heavily recruited, and Nixon said most schools like him as a defensive back. Nixon has two cousins who play Division I football -- former Central Catholic running back Eugene Jarvis (Kent State) and former McKeesport linebacker Anthony Leonard (West Virginia).

Some other WPIAL juniors who are expected to be recruited by Division I schools are Shaler tight end-defensive end

J.P. Holtz, Montour quarterback Dillon Buchel, Fox Chapel offensive lineman Adam Bisnowaty (6 feet 7, 270 pounds) and South Allegheny lineman Jesse James (6-8, 250 pounds).Recruiting notes

FORT WAYNE ? The exposure has worked for some of the Fort Wayne area?s best high school football players before, and three more will try to raise their recruiting stock at the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio, starting Thursday.

Juniors Donte Bowen (Harding), Te?Vaughn Hurse (New Haven) and Zach Terrell (Homestead) will be among 300 of the nation?s top high school football underclassmen at the combine.

Continued...

Bowen, a 6-2, 275-pound defensive tackle, had 60 tackles and 6 sacks for the Hawks, but will play at Snider next season with the impending closure of Harding.

"I'm pretty excited for the trip to Texas," Bowen said. "I'm going to go down there and showcase my talent. I feel blessed to be in this position."

Colleges interested in Bowen include Indiana, Ohio State, Iowa, UConn, UCLA, Purdue and Ball State.

Lawrence Brown a 6-3, 230-pound tight end from Columbus (Miss.) New Hope says he has an offer from Ole Miss, his first so far. He camped at Ohio State and Southern Miss this past summer. Was born in Columbus, Ohio and says the Buckeyes are his "dream school."

Here Sheimiah Townsend from Indianapolis (Ind.) Lawrence Central. The 6-1, 200-pound linebacker has already picked up an offer from Iowa and is receiving interest from the likes of Michigan State and Ohio State.

Iowa offered him at the end of his sophomore year when they were up at his school and saw him running a 40. He got out to Iowa City for the Iowa-Michigan State game and considers the Hawkeyes a contender for his services.

"I think it is a pretty good school. They have great facilities and good coaches.

He said he "really want" to get down to the sec and Auburn and Florida State are two schools in the south that interest him. As a junior he estimated he recorded between 8-10 sacks.

Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep strong safety D.J. Singelton is here. He has early offers from Rutgers and Miami and said neither program has the early edge right now.

Ohio State is his favorite but he hasn't gotten in contact with the Buckeyes' staff yet. Florida, LSU, Oregon, TCU and Georgia also showing interest.

Singleton said at this point if Ohio State offered he'd probably commit.

Sarasota (Fla.) Booker CB Ezra Robinson (6-0/165) plays wide receiver, corner, safety, and even OLB for his school. He will be playing CB this week.

He is hearing a lot from Florida State, Georgia, Stanford and Ohio State with a junior day scheduled at UGA on Jan. 29. No offers just yet but all four of those schools appear close

Running back Greg Garmon from Erie (Pa.) McDowell has early offers from North Carolina, Pitt and Buffalo. The Tar Heels stand out the most but Garmon is going to wait to see which other offers arrive.

Penn State, Ohio State, Rutgers, Wisconsin are all interested. Garmon would like to hear from more schools in the south like Florida and Miami.

Garmon had 1,200 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 141 carries.

Here with Detroit Crockett WR/DB James White. He is 6-1, 172 pounds and legitimately can play both ways. He had about 70 tackles and nine interceptions as a junior and 75 catches for 753 yards and seven touchdowns.

He could be D1 on both sides of the football, but prefers WR... only slightly. He is definitely open to playing defense as well.

Likes Michigan State because of their coaching staff and Iowa because of their defense. Those schools plus Michigan and Wisconsin round out his top four. He has already visited all of his top four schools.

Other schools he is hearing from include Ohio State, Florida and Alabama.

He knows Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham real well (played at the same school) and considers him a mentor.

Here with North Bergen (N.J.) linebacker Vin Ascolese. The 6-2, 205-pound prospect has received interest from 11 different schools including, Penn State, LSU, Ohio State, Alabama, Boston College and Nebraska.

Coach Anderson at Penn State was in his school earlier this week. He was saying the Nitanny Lions like how Vin is growing and he loves how he plays. Vin gave him some game film, and Penn State will be back to see him later this month after watching the game film.

He feels Boston College may be closest to offering, followed by Penn State and Rutgers. He expects his recruitment will roll into his senior season and he will decide after his senior season.

As a junior he tallied 90 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, five sacks, an interception and five forced fumbles in the biggest class in New Jersey.

South Bend (Ind.) Washington wide receiver Gehrig Dieter has a scholarship offer from Bowling Green.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound prospect is hearing from Ohio State, Boston College, Michigan State, Big Ten, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Notre Dame. He has visited Notre Dame several times and made stops at Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State during the fall.

Notre Dame is the hometown school but Dieter has tried to put that aside as he evaluates his recruitment.

"I've put it aside," Dieter said. "More my family are fans than me. It?s just another school."
