2012 Offense Discussion

Not sure we need a Percy with Braxton in the backfield. I think he is fast and elusive enough to get the job done. We've got plenty of backs that can pound it inside like Tebow, the roles will just be reversed this time around. If a wide receiver emerges that can stretch the field, we should be able to replicate the productivity with a couple of guys.

Agreed.
Can't wait for devin smith to have a big year for us. He showed some flashes last season

So you're saying Braxton Miller is our Percy Harvin?????? I knew it. Move him to reciever. Put Rod Smith at H-Back and move Dunn to quarterback. It's perfect!

I think Decker or Fragel would be the best, neither can probably throw very well, but they could see over any D-linemen and no way passes get tipped

In all seriousness, re the Harvin role, if I understand correctly, Coach Meyer states in order to spread a team horizontally , you need that speedy, elusive guy to run sideline to sideline. I'm not sure, with the exception of Philly Brown, that tOSU has that guy. Most of the lead candidates lack either elite speed, or elusiveness, we shall see.

With a big back, and a speedy, elusive QB, it will be different than Coach had at UF, and I can't wait to see the product the Staff puts on the field.

Disagree.

The whole point of a Percy Harvin-type WR/RB is to create mis-matches against the defense. He, like having Braxton, is all about adding weapons to the offense. If you don't have a threat like him, you're removing one area of the field that the defense has to watch out for.

Having backs that can pound it inside like Tebow is great, but why limit yourself simply to power-RBs and dual-threat QBs? Adding in the combo RB/WR will make teams have to cover more film and confuse defenses more often.

For every time Harvin got the ball and made a fantastic run, there are probably just as many plays that the ball was faked to Harvin and someone else had a great gain because the defense over-pursued Harvin and missed the right man with the ball.

Corey Brown seems like a decent candidate. Wasn't he a running back in high school anyway?

Him or Jordan Hall seem like the only options. Hall doesn't have much speed, but he could fit that hybrid role.

I think one of the most popular candidates for the role is philly brown for the reasons u mentioned. I would just like to see the ball in his hands in any way. Hopefully he learns to.catch better this year, if.not then hand off or screens, something to get the ball in his hands. Hall is probably the 2nd most popular option. He has already been used in various ways already but he didn't really excel at any one of them imo. Idk if that was due to the playcalling or were we spreading him thin

Because a guy like Percy Harvin doesn't come along that often. Bruising running backs and dual threat quarterbacks are much easier to come by. If we find a guy on our roster that can do it all that'd be great, but I don't think the position is vital to the scheme.

"The question I have is, do we have that dynamic player on offense?" said Meyer. "Where's the Ted Ginns of the world? Were they hiding [last] year? I hope we have those guys. That's a big concern of mine right now."

If Meyer coached him it would be called the Ted Ginn position.

Why is there such an obsession with a hybrid, percy position? Urban won 2 titles, and the first won where he dominated us, he had no such player and they did pretty well. Their defense led the way with d line play, and chris leak committed few turnovers but he was nowhere near as athletic as braxton. And their wrs were pretty mediocre. The only differencr is our team is younger than theirs and our wrs could be better if worked with more.
Imo, our team will be fine with or without that dynamic player. I would like one, and believe we have one for.2013 in Marshall but the 2012 season will be fine for us with our current roster. As long as our pass rush is deadly is the most important.

Um, that 2006 team had Percy Harvin

EDIT: In that game, Percy had 14 touches for 82 yards and a TD. On the year he had 855 total yards and 5 TD's. Pretty productive for a true frosh.

And I wasn't trying to sound like a smartass with that first post, I just remember him running those damn sweeps wide on us all night.

Then why did Urban run the scheme at Utah with Steve Savoy, who had better averages than Harvin? Yes, having a 5 star WR with freakish skills doesn't come along very often, but neither does a Chris Wells, or Terelle Pryor. That doesn't mean that you have to abandon power running or dual-thread QBs when you have someone that may not be as adept.

I am excited about handoffs. No throw to mess up. No catch to mess up.

If there were half throws, half handoffs, the odds of something going wrong with the pass drop by half.
