Looking ahead to 2012 class
Posted by mdyer 02/03/11

We?ve just completed National Signing Day 2011, but here is an early look at some of the area?s top recruits in the 2012 class. I mentioned most of these players in December, but here are a few updates of players with reported scholarship offers, according to their high school coaches:

* Taft DE Adolphus Washington (6-foot-4, 245 pounds). Offers from UC, Ohio State, Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan State, Purdue, Pittsburgh, Texas, Illinois, Texas A&M and Boston College.
* Taft WR Dwayne Stanford (6-4, 190). Taft coach Mike Martin said Stanford has verbal offers from Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Michigan State and Purdue.
* Wyoming OL Terry Davis (6-4, 280) was offered by Ohio and Toledo in late January.
* Colerain LB Joe Bolden (6-3, 225) has been offered by UC, Northwestern, Illinois and North Carolina. He was offered by Arizona today.
* Moeller junior WR Monty Madaris (6-2, 185) has offers from UC, Michigan State, Boston College and Bowling Green.
* Mason tackle Joseph Spencer (6-4, 275) was offered by Ohio University on Jan. 19.
* Colerain safety Andre Jones (6-1, 185) was offered by UC the week of Jan. 10.
* Kings junior RB Jamire Westbrook (5-9, 206) has offers from UC and Ohio.
* Middletown CB Cody Quinn (5-11, 165) has offers from UC and Bowling Green.
* Middletown WR Zach Edwards has been offered by Bowling Green.
* La Salle senior DE Ryan Leahy (6-6, 240) has an offer from UC.
* Oak Hills OL Caleb Stacey (6-4, 280) was offered by Illinois on Wednesday. Also has offers from Toledo, Ohio and Bowling Green.
* Sycamore TE A.J. Williams (6-6, 255) has been offered by Ohio University, Bowling Green and Toledo.

Here's a list of some of the area's top recruits for next year:

? Austin Appleby, quarterback, North Canton Hoover: It says a lot when a quarterback receives an offer in his junior year. Appleby got one from Toledo this past weekend. You can be sure the rest of the Mid-American Conference will be sniffing around. In an injury-shortened season, Appleby completed 51 percent of his passes (94-of-186) for 1,427 yards and 14 touchdowns.

? Ryan Anderson, guard, Kent Roosevelt: Anderson has to be a patient kind of guy. It would take that and the wisdom of Solomon to endure what this offensive lineman has with the University of Pittsburgh. He committed to former coach Dave Wannstedt, who resigned, and watched as Wannstedt's first replacement was fired for alleged domestic abuse. Through it all, Anderson stayed the course. He still seems set to head to Pitt and play for coach Todd Graham.

? Bri'onte Dunn, running back, GlenOak: Billed as a ''young Jim Brown'' ? there's nothing like putting pressure on a high school player ? Dunn will enter his season knowing that he's already committed to Ohio State, after having received offers from Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame.

? DaShawn Hall, free safety, GlenOak: The free safety was ranked as one of the state's best sophomores, but suffered through injury during his junior season. He has drawn interest from Ohio State, Ohio University and Pitt and possesses the size ? 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds ? to play defensive back in college. He runs a 4.55 40-yard dash, according to scouting services.

? LaTroy Lewis, defensive end, Archbishop Hoban: Fast and powerful, Lewis and teammate Greg McMullen are bookends for Hoban. He plays ferociously on defense, and he and Lewis were bright spots on a disappointing Hoban football team. He has offers from Ohio State and Cincinnati and interest from a host of other schools.

? Mason Monheim, running back-middle linebacker, Orrville: He has an offer from Illinois. He has visited schools that include Cincinnati, Michigan and Nebraska.

? Ross Martin, kicker, Walsh Jesuit: Coming into last season, Martin was ranked the second-best kicker in the nation and performed well at camps prior to the season. He has drawn interest from schools in the Big Ten, Southeast Conference and others.

? Greg McMullen, defensive end, Archbishop Hoban: It would be easy just to type see LaTroy Lewis here, except McMullen is faster and stronger than his teammate. He has offers from Ohio State, Michigan State, Nebraska and Purdue.

? Corey Smith, wide receiver, Buchtel: Smith possesses the speed, runs crisp routes and has the ability to take over the game with his skills. He makes difficult receptions look easy, but can also make easy receptions look difficult. He has indicated a strong interest in attending Ohio State, but the decision may come down to where he and teammate Jarrod Wilson can play together.

? Se'Von Pittman, defensive end, Canton McKinley: A force on the McKinley defense, Pittman helps to cap off the list of top defensive ends in the area. He's big, 6-foot-4, fast (4.6 in the 40-yard dash) and can be dominating. So far, he has an offer from West Virginia, but other colleges have been sniffing around.

Q: Hey, Tim: Who are the top football recruits for next year? Is Kent Roosevelt tackle Ryan Anderson one of them?

-- Jay Tischendorf, Kent

A: Hey, Jay: It's too early to rank guys, but when thinking about next season, it's pretty clear this will be a banner year for linemen. Anderson (6-4, 300) definitely is among the area's best in the Class of 2012.

Here are more current juniors who will be major-college recruits: St. Edward tackles Kyle Kalis (6-5, 305), Tyler Orlosky (6-4, 285) and Greg Kuhar (6-3, 285), and end Sam Grant (6-6, 225); Archbishop Hoban ends Greg McMullen (6-5, 260) and LaTroy Lewis (6-4, 230); Hudson tackle Quaison Osborne (6-4, 327); Streetsboro tackle Alex Todd (6-4, 290); Aurora end Troy Watson (6-6, 255); Tallmadge tackle Jon Cipa (6-5, 305); Avon end Bryan Cox (6-3, 220); and Mentor end Tom Strobel (6-6, 240). St. Edward's Kalis has committed to Ohio State, and Kuhar might wrestle in college.

A wildcard is Brush's Pharaoh Brown (6-7, 215), who began last year at quarterback and finished at defensive end.

Glenville has another set of outstanding defensive backs in Devan Bogard and V'Angelo Bentley. There are other highly regarded defensive back/wide receivers, perhaps none better than Buchtel's Corey Smith. Others DB/WRs to watch are St. Ignatius' Mike Svetina, Solon's Tres Barksdale, Bruswick's Scott Suren and North Royalton's Bobby Barnes.

The area is thin at quarterback, but two under-the-radar guys are University School's Tyler Eden (6-4, 215) and St. Edward's Henry Hilow (6-3, 195), who will be a first-year starter.

Who is the local guy Ohio State coach Jim Tressel wants most? It might be Walsh Jesuit kicker Ross Martin.

Defensive back Jermaine Edmondson, however, is another McKinley player getting FBS looks.

At Marlington, head coach Ed Miley is preparing for a recruiting process perhaps unlike any the NBC school has ever seen. Offensive lineman Zach Higgins (6-foot-5, 300 pounds) has been offered by Mid-American Ball State. But Miley expects plenty more offers to come his way.

Then there is Repository Player of the Year Alden Hill. Last year, Hill ran a slow 40-yard time at an ESPN Rise combine in Massillon. However, at college camps, Hill has consistently ran 4.6.

With two players like that, it benefits the rest of the team. Athlete Dymonte Thomas will only be a junior next season. He is being recruited on the same national level as Pittman. Thomas will be in the 2013 class.

I like this kids film a lot. He may not get a lot of pub being in this crazy DL class of '12, but I like him. If this class does get at about 20 or so I wouldn't mind an offer going out to him. Bring him in and find his position when he gets here. He looked good at DE and I know his scoutingohio profile says TE. So bring him in and the staff will know where to put him. I like him a lot.

What do you guys think of him?
Does anybody know what kind of competition Brush HS plays?
