I think once they clean up the tackling and some of the miscommunication on the back end in the secondary, they'll be fine.

This allowed Urb to be more conservative running plays, perhaps keeping Braxton from being invited to New York. Of course, this is speculative, but I do remember UFM saying he got conservative against Wisky because the defense was playing well. They turned things around in November, however, when they were second in the country in total defense, allowing just 269.7 yards per game.

Illinois: 14 points, 96 yards passing, 74 yards rushing, 170 total yards.
Wisconsin: 14 points, 154 yards passing, 206 yards rushing, 360 total yards.
Michigan: 21 points, 171 yards passing, 108 yards rushing, 279 total yards.
That works out to 16.3 ppg, 140.3 yards passing, 129.3 yards rushing, 269.7 total offense.
Illinois' offense flat out sucked (next to last in the country in total offense). Wisconsin's offense wasn't all that great. They rolled it up against shit teams (38 against Purdue and Minnesota, and 62 against Indiana), but couldn't do shit against decent or solid defenses (13 against MSU, and 14 against us and Stanford). Michigan scored a ton against everyone that didn't have a defense but, like Wisconsin, struggled against decent to solid defenses (14 against Alabama, 6 against Notre Dame, 12 against MSU, and 9 against Nebraska).
So while it was pleasant to see a significant statistical improvement, it may not be as great as the numbers suggest. More than the monthly stats, the thing I see as the most positive aspect was how we totally shut Michigan down in the second half. Hopefully the defense uses that as a springboard into next season...

I think the defense did improve as the year went along but overall, I thought all year, there was poor tackling, a lack of a pass rush, and just overall poor pass defense. I also thought the pass rush was improved when Spense, and Aldolphus took the field.
Our LB situation is truly puzzling. Great recruits but cannot seemed to produce at a high level. Fick keeps saying the schemes are hard to learn/pick up. Maybe the key is to simplify things. Sometimes simple is best. That way we play to their strengths, i.e. their athleticism.
Kwon would definitely have a chance to compete for a starting role, especially if Shazier leaves.
How hard is it when you throw Boren in at MLB in the middle of the year and he plays very well and the rest of the OSU defense improves greatly last year?
And our defense, while improved, was still far short of dominating after his transition. It'll take more than a solid LB corps.
Not sure of the ranking, but the defense was indeed much improved. In the three games in Nov '12, the defense gave up 13 points to Illinois, 14 to Wisconsin (their second TD came at the end of regulation), and 21 points to Michigan (but 0 points and something like 36 yards of offense in the second half). If we had that defense Saturday we'd be playing FSU for the national title...The defense was ranked #1 or #2 in the country in the month of November last year.
They were improved, not world beaters or up to Silver bullet standards.
Back to Raekwon, I like where we stand, especially in relation to Urbans visit.
