2012 Defense Discussion

12-0 in 2012

When you look at all of the transfers in the secondary and Domicone blowing an ACL in the bowl game they are going to be awfully thin in the secondary for the Spring game.....just like last year's game with the o-line injuries and departures.

Maybe the new cornerback coach will come with a couple of corners and safeties?

Ohio State Spring Preview - Defense
theBuckeyeBattleCry.com

Ohio State's defense has been one of the most consistently excellent units in college football over the last decade.

Sadly, the 2011 season was a major bump in the road for the defense and the team. Needless to say, the Silver Bullets will be looking to get back on track in Urban Meyer's first year as head coach.

There are some new faces on the defensive coaching staff to help out in that regard, but some familiar ones as well.

Luke Fickell is the primary holdover from the previous staff. He was the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach under Tressel. He will basically be assuming the same roll under Meyer- with perhaps a bit more emphasis on being the primary coordinator.

The best case scenario will be if Fickell can continue to implement the defensive system that has worked so well over the past decade and combine that with some fresh ideas from the new staff to take the defense to an even higher level of excellence.

The talent is in place to do that this season, but depth is a major concern everywhere outside of the trenches. Additionally, the transition to new position coaches could create some unexpected problems in the first year.

Here is a look at some of the things to watch for at each position as the spring game approaches and the depth chart is sorted out.

Buckeyes welcome back most of defense from 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - While everyone seems to be talking about Urban Meyer's new hurry-up offense at Ohio State, the defense has been quietly going about its business.

OK, maybe not exactly quietly.

"I would say practices are a little more enthusiastic. A lot more fast tempo,'' said lineman John Simon, acknowledged as the leader of the defense. "It's good for us. That's what we need. It's making guys think on their feet and think fast. That's how games are played, so it's getting us prepared.''

The Buckeyes return nine starters on defense from a team that floundered at times during a 6-7 season. The defense was 27th in the nation in points allowed and 19th in yardage permitted.

But with Simon and Johnathan Hankins playing well up front this spring, and corners Travis Howard and Bradley Roby holding down the fort in the secondary, there are high hopes for a big improvement this fall.

There's an edge to Meyer's practices that touches every player at every position. Almost every drill, every bit of conditioning, is a head-to-head competition.

"It's fun. Because last year there really wasn't that much competition,'' Hankins said. "To see each other fight every day every play is fun. Practice is faster.''

Meyer has gushed about Simon, in particular, this spring. Summoning up the name of a quarterback who led one of his Florida teams to a national championship, Meyer referred to Simon as "Tebowish.''

Simon deflects that kind of high praise.

"It's a great honor everything that he says about me,'' said the senior, who led the team with seven sacks last season. "But we've got a lot of guys on this team who deserve that honor as well.''

Ohio State defense strives to be 'best in America'

As the Buckeyes football team put spring practice behind them, players and coaches know they have much to improve upon in the coming months before the 2012 season kicks off.

Although the team was ruled ineligible for a bowl game this coming season and have no championships to chase, players said that hasn?t made them any less motivated.

?All we?re thinking about is beating everybody that comes into the ?Shoe and wherever we go,? sophomore cornerback Bradley Roby said. ?We just want to win every game. That?s our plan.?

Players said the initial news of their team?s ineligibility was frustrating, but when word came that new coach Urban Meyer was taking the reigns, their focus began to shift.

?Everyone was pretty down about the whole thing,? sophomore cornerback Doran Grant said. ?We thought first all that stuff (from the previous season), now this? But Coach Meyer came in and gave us a plan and we just took off with it.?

And that plan, according to players, involved winning. One of the newest addition to Ohio State football practices has been the winner and loser days, where every drill is either counted as a win, or a loss for the offense and defense.

?It?s really competitive out there,? senior cornerback Travis Howard said. ?Our goal is to compete every practice and win every play.?

And the increased competition has made an impression on the defensive players, who want to get back to the hard-nosed ?Silver Bullet? defense OSU has been known for in years past.

?We kind of fell off a bit last year,? Howard said. ?But everybody has come back strong, has the right mentality and the right attitude. We?re ready to take on that role of a ?Silver Bullet? defense again at Ohio State. It?s definitely our time this year.?

Speaking of Travis Howard, I really think we are going to see his best year this year. Roby is a lockdown. If Howard steps his game up the secondary will be very very good. Add that in to the dominating Dline and we might not even notice the growing pains in the linebackers.

Lets play some football!!!
