2012 Defense Discussion

Anyone else concerned at all by the lack of rotation on the D-Line? Yes, I know it's our strength, but with Hankins and Williams getting dinged up I wouldn't have had them out there w/ us up by 25 in the 4th...

Not when Hankins, Simon, and Goebel spent most of the night in the backfield running after Martinez.

-I am actually more encouraged after last night than any other game regardless of the points allowed.
-That was by far the most dangerous/difficult offense left on the schedule.
-It's a team game and if the offense sets the bar to where an opponent has to realistically score 35+ to beat us then this might as well be the '85 Bears from here on out....no one left has that kind of firepower.
-Without rewatching it it seems Nebraska stuck with trying to run between the tackles longer than any opponent to date and only started to hurt the defense once they started attacking the edges (like everyone else).

I think it bears repeating and remembering as we look at upcoming opponents, no one has the combination of running/passing QB and legit threat RB that Nebraska does.
I still think Michigan's offense is going to be an equal challenge. But between now and then, our defense should overpower the offenses we see.

The difference I see is that 'nard can't run the read option nearly as well, doesn't have the same RB threat and can't throw as well as TM.

If he's healthy he's a threat but he doesn't have nearly the complimentary pieces imo.

Gonna be a slow week, all we have to bitch about is the 38 points:biggrin:

Yeah, it is going to be so slow that midweek, I am going to have to go over to the rankings thread and talk about how tOSU gets no respect.

(The ultimate swagger is to be ranked number one and talk about how your school gets not respect.)

Plus, if we get up by a couple of scores, he has to revert to all-pass mode. That mode isn't pretty.

I didn't see the Alabama game with tSUN. I wonder how Saban shut tSUN down?

1.) Far better athletes.

2.) Hoke and his offense played that game to keep 'nard upright for the rest of the season, period. They didn't even bother trying to run the football vertically. Very few design runs, counters for Denard, which was their only shot at 'Bama, virtually non-existent. Forced 'nard to throw before the thought of running the ball ever crossed their minds = big time Bama victory.

3.). Far, far better athletes.

Not to get off topic, but Alabama could shut down anybody. Michigan scoring 14 points off that defense was actually quite impressive. My guess is that if Alabama loses this year, it's going to be because of their offense, not their defense.

Just to stay on topic...I loved our defense this weekend. Sure, there were still mistakes. But playmakers are emerging, and that's huge and exactly what we needed. They lacked swagger on defense in the non conference schedule...they have found that swagger. Now if they can keep that swagger, and keep improving week to week with the small things, then no team will be able to come close to scoring as much as we will score on them leading up to The Game.

Next week won't be a cakewalk for the defense. They will still need that swagger, or else Indiana can put up points.
