2011 tOSU Defense Discussion

Bradley Roby is the only player in the secondary that I have confidence in.

Playing soft zone with no pressure on the QB doesn't help matters.

The vanilla play calling probably stems from a lack of confidence in the secondary and their ability to match up one-on-one, but still, I don't think the play calling did this team any favors on either side of the ball this season.

This. On DR's TD pass to Odoms, I couldn't believe how much time DR had to throw. And even though we only rushed 3 (Simon had dropped to spy DR), Odoms was still wide open. With a bad passer like DR, you don't give him time to throw. You pressure him and watch the hilarity begin. Iowa and MSU had phenomenal game plans for dealing with DR. Wish we would've had a similar plan. :(

I suspect it had just as much to do with the lack of pass rushers on this year's defense after Nathan Williams went down. If you are going to play man, you can only expect your secondary to maintain coverage for so long. We should really be focusing our recruiting on pass rushers. If you think back a few years, we always had great pass rushers (Gholston, Gibson, Heyward could get it done), but seemed to lack the big, floppy-bellied space eaters on the interior of the line. We've brought in good interior lineman in the previous few years (Simon and Hankins, most notably), but now it seems like we don't have any real edge rushers. Of course, I thought a guy like Melvin Fellows would be playing this role by now, but that hasn't panned out for a variety of reasons and even he is more of a hybrid lineman that can slide inside or outside. Hopefully someone like Kenny Hayes can step into that role in the future, and, as I said above, Washington is a prototypical pass rusher.

But my broader point is that when you can't get a pass rush at all, it puts your secondary in a really terrible position and exposes a lot of blemishes that you might not otherwise see if the QB were operating under duress. But there is no excuse for the horrific tackling in the secondary this season from everyone but Roby.

I understand and agree with what you're saying, but when your front four can't get a pass rush, isn't it on the play calling to address that?

How many times did we dial up a blitz yesterday? I can only distinctly remember one... and it worked great.

Really bad angles were regularly taken too.

Very true. I imagine the concept was that they wanted to keep the linebackers in position to contain Robinson. But since our linebackers are never in position anyway, might as well blitz with them. Especially Sabino, who seems to have no idea where he's supposed to be on the field.

That was my general thought.

Sitting, waiting and reacting (aka spying) was a recipe for disaster (especially with Simon, hey, let's take our best pass rusher and completely neutralize him by making him literally stand still in the middle of the field, like he would be able to chase down Robinson in the open field anyway, what the hell was that about?).

When the linebackers are completely incapable of reacting and tracking down Robinson and the misdirections, you might as well get a little proactive, take a guess, blitz and hopefully meet them in the backfield once and awhile.
