2011 Stanley Cup Finals - Canucks-Bruins

There are rumors flying around about a Bruins fan getting pushed off an overpass in Vancouver and dying. If that's true, fuck Vancouver and I hope they never win a cup. I'm also glad my subconscious was rooting for Boston (I cheered when they scored - I thought I hated Boston.. who knew?). Either way, fuck Vancouver for taking shit too far.

Happy for Tim Thomas either way.

According to the latest AP article (3:40pm today) there have been no deaths, but that could change. The Bruin's fan pushed off an overpass story could have some legs.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP)?Almost 150 people required hospital treatment and close to 100 were arrested after rioters swept through downtown Vancouver following a Canucks loss to the Boston Bruins in the decisive Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.
Vancouver Coastal Health spokeswoman Anna Marie D?Angelo said Thursday that three stabbing victims had been admitted and an unidentified man was in critical condition with head injuries after a fall from a viaduct.

presumably the georgia street viaduct. where a road and sidewalk cross the viaduct right by the arena. (how you get from gm/rogers/etc to trillium park for those of you vaguely familiar with the area)

I've been saying it all Finals long. This is REALLY REALLY good for the sport that it's gone to a Game 7 while the NBA is entering the early phases of labor disputes and CBA negotiations, and the NFL is STILL struggling to solve their CBA woes.

The only thing I see changing in the NHL is taking shootouts away completely and OT losses not getting a point. Shootouts haven't lived up to expectations (IMO), and who doesn't love seeing teams battle it out in a 20 minute OT period?! OT Losses getting a point, well, that was just stupid to begin with. Giving too much false hope to teams like Columbus, Colorado, and everyone else who was on the outside looking in with a stupid amount of OT losses.
if you go back to when shootouts were implemented, essentially the playoff outcomes are the same if the games tied, in the old fashion. the 20 minute golden goal ot are just not reasonable for the regular season. it is not close to equitable, nor would you get a good product if teams faced golden goal ot at a time when back to back are commonplace (especially in the west where you may have back to back with 1,000 or 2,000 miles of travel.). further, few seem to remember the kiss your sister feeling of the old tie rule. while id agree many teams play for ot, or the skills competition, it certainly gives finality to the game. however, i do agree that it has lost significant luster, and appeal. im not sure of a truely viable alternative though.

Not a huge hockey guy and just started watching it. Is it normal for the games to change this much night to night?
yes, but not to this extent. hockey has two distinct advantages for the home team that make it very unique. the home team is allowed the "second change." this means the road team is required to ice their players (put their team out on the ice out on the ice) first after a stoppage in play, the home team is given sometime (sometimes as much as 20-30 seconds) to counter with their lineup. so essentially it is a huge match up advantage for the home team. furthermore, the home team's centre puts his stick on the ice second for faceoffs. basically when hes ready and set the linesman drops the puck. it is usually worth a couple % points on the dots, and thus results in 2-3 more possessions for the home team.

You know, and please don't take this the wrong way, but the most obnoxious fans I've met other than Pens fans have been Canucklehead fans.

I'm not an obnoxious Pens fan so it's all good. I fucking hate Pittsburgh fans much of the time. I just love the Penguins.

Although the playoff game I attended left me very, very impressed at the fanbase. I didn't see a single obnoxious fan. I'm completely serious, and not exaggerating. Maybe the fans outside the city (or the ones not attending playoff games) who are the problem. Who knows.
