2011 Secondary, or DBs, Discussion

Plus, under Tressel we didnt really play that much man-to-man all over the field such as we did with Cooper. Hence, more "real" shut down type corners under Cooper than with Tressel. Doesnt mean they werent all great college players.

I am going to predict that this secondary will be deeper and more talented than last year's group. Tyler going down last year could end up being a hidden blessing for the Bucks because Bryant got extended playing time and gained experience. Bringing Tyler back is a huge benefit as well. We will be 3 deep at corner with arguably no drop-off with Howard, Roby, and Clarke with the uber-talented true-freshman Doran Grant. Add to the mix an experienced starter in Orhian Johnson and a lighting rod of a safety in Barnett, along with Tyler and Bryant, this could possibly be the best secondary fielded by an OSU team in the last ten years. As you can tell, I am very excited about this defense.

Go Bucks!

Thus far into the early season, this group has been a HUGE surprise. Also surprised there's not more discussion about these fellas in this thread after the game they just had!

Dom, Roby, and CJ played an outstanding first game of the season. And they did this well without Travis Howard playing a down. When you have great players like Christian Bryant, Doran Grant, and Pittsburgh Brown on the bench, you know the guys playing are REALLY good. And the scary part about it is that there is only 1 senior in the 2-deep in our defensive backfield (Tyler Moeller). These guys are just getting their feet wet.

Gotta be excited for the future. Looked like we had some kinks to work out with our run defense. If we can get those shored up by B1G season, we're going to make some serious noise this year.

If Clarke lost the position battle in camp, it leaves me feeling pretty well about this group's chances going forward. They were all outstanding, and Clarke shined in particular.

Agree.

I think Akron looked and thought "Oh, we're going to attack this guy, he's a backup." He responded very well.

I wouldn't say strongest but the play of the defensive backs and Dominic Clarke in particular has been a pleasant surprise. They need to take better tackling angles though. Both of the long plays by Toledo showed very poor angles.

Roby blanketed his man all day. I counted one completion to his man in six attempts, for 7 yards total gain. Excellent coverage by the other DBs also. Most of the Rockets passing yardage was from screen passes, which the Buckeyes seem consistently unable to stop (and have for the past 7-8 years).

The speed of our young backs, and the ability to use that speed to close in on receivers has been a savior for us.

The biggest strength of our D-backfield though has been the lack of PI calls. Our backs are young and fast but they are able to cover a guy 1-on-1, get a swat and keep it penalty-free.

Yes. It seems there were a lot of complaints the last few years about a defensive back that was excellent at coverage but he didn't get his head turned around to defend the ball. Dominic Clarke turns his head and attacks the ball when he sees it.

No one's been able to throw downfield on us yet, but horrible pursuit and tackling on little quick hits led to some BIG plays by Toledo today. I'd say defensive line is the strongest part of the team.
Barnett had a tough game today. I thought the corners played well for their age, terrific coverage and they were getting held like crazy on the running plays.

The safeties need to have a bigger presence out there. Barnett had a few big hits early on to start setting the tone, then he disappeared. They put a lot of pressure on our guys but we can't count on our LBs to make all of the plays on the perimeter against 5 WR sets. Sabino & Sweat made the majority of the good stops on those bubble screens & swing passes.

I'll disagree with you on Barnett, Josh. He made no "big hits" that I saw, but looked to me to be nearly flawless in coverage. Had a couple of PBUs, I believe.
