Ohio State expected to open the season with four tailbacks ready to play. And after one game, it appears the Buckeyes will get there.
The Buckeyes opened on Saturday against Akron with only Carlos Hyde, making his first start, and Rod Smith available. Jordan Hall, the projected starter, was suspended after accepting $200 for attending a charity event earlier this year. Backup Jaamal Berry was recovering from a pulled hamstring.
Coach Luke Fickell said yesterday that all will be available for a home game against Toledo on Saturday, and he wouldn?t be surprised if Hyde and Smith remained the first two options.
He said he wanted those two to understand that ?We?re not just going to walk right past you after what you did last week. Hopefully, it gives them a little bit of a pep and makes them understand, ?We count.? We appreciate what they did, and we?re not going to overlook it.?
It underscores why a college team can never have too many capable tailbacks. Senior Daniel Herron, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, would have been the starter if not for a five-game suspension he is serving for accepting impermissible benefits.
Coming out of spring drills, Hall, a junior, had taken the interim No. 1 spot backed up by Berry, a third-year sophomore. Then serendipity took over with Hyde, a sophomore, and Smith, a redshirt freshman, finding out eight days ago they would be the entire depth chart at tailback for the season opener.
