2011 Running Backs Discussion

Ohio State football: Two added to the mix at tailback

The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State expected to open the season with four tailbacks ready to play. And after one game, it appears the Buckeyes will get there.

The Buckeyes opened on Saturday against Akron with only Carlos Hyde, making his first start, and Rod Smith available. Jordan Hall, the projected starter, was suspended after accepting $200 for attending a charity event earlier this year. Backup Jaamal Berry was recovering from a pulled hamstring.

Coach Luke Fickell said yesterday that all will be available for a home game against Toledo on Saturday, and he wouldn?t be surprised if Hyde and Smith remained the first two options.

He said he wanted those two to understand that ?We?re not just going to walk right past you after what you did last week. Hopefully, it gives them a little bit of a pep and makes them understand, ?We count.? We appreciate what they did, and we?re not going to overlook it.?

It underscores why a college team can never have too many capable tailbacks. Senior Daniel Herron, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, would have been the starter if not for a five-game suspension he is serving for accepting impermissible benefits.

Coming out of spring drills, Hall, a junior, had taken the interim No. 1 spot backed up by Berry, a third-year sophomore. Then serendipity took over with Hyde, a sophomore, and Smith, a redshirt freshman, finding out eight days ago they would be the entire depth chart at tailback for the season opener.

2 fumbles by Smith in 2 games is not good.
Hyde has been a pleasent surprise and will keep getting better. Remember, he's just a young kid with a lot of learning to grow on.
We really, really need Berry to get healthy.
So much for our deep backfield. :(

He was healthy and returning kicks. Why he got no carries is way beyond me.

That using a kickoffs as proof that he's full go is a flawed approach.

With Hall & Boom still out, they will need Berry as fresh as possible for next week.

Yes, they definitely need Berry back ASAP (as far as a RB).

Hall is such a huge loss for this offense, his versatility makes his impact even greater. The ability to stretch him out into the slot will (hopefully) give Joe the breathing room he needs next week. Without that, I fear he might be a sitting duck next week.

Q. In regards to that running game, Carlos Hyde did have that 36 yard touchdown that helped gain the momentum back in the second quarter. So how important has his role been in these first two games and where do you see him when you get some of your suspended guys back?
COACH FICKELL: Carlos Hyde is our starting running back. And I think he's done a very good job at doing what we've asked him to do, you know.

The thing about running backs is they've got to be tough because they're going to take shots. Guys are going to hit them in the legs, they're going to hit them in the head. It's not a position that you're not going to come in on Sunday morning and not feel it whether you had six carries and 35 blocks.

But he's done a very good job. He's our starting running back. We'll continue to feed him and, you know, I believe he's only going to get stronger.

Fickell is very adamant about Hyde being the #1 back regardless of suspensions.

Not sure I'm feeling very positive about Coach Fickell's personnel choices on offense right at the moment.

Chill brah..... Sip some wine. Nibble some cheese. Listen to the aural poetry of well played chamber music, and enjoy the sunshine and cool breeze on your skin.

Luke got it dog... I'm good. You just take care of you.

Right now I'm not sure which Hyde we're going to get... the guy who runs full sprint down hill or the one who's going to have a huge hole but runs into something giving the defense time to adjust and give support. I like Hyde but once Herron gets back that'll be the best back we have without a doubt.

By Wisconsin if OSU's backfield isn't Braxton-Herron-Hall I will not be pleased.
