2011 Rugby World Cup (Sept 9 - Oct 23) in New Zealand

Claddagh on Front St. downtown (previous stomping grounds of Wade and rugbybuck) will be showing the US/Russia game tomorrow night at 8PM.

And Saturday they'll be featuring a quasi-Irish guitar/banjo duo allegedly on a cross-country tour... and that does a terrible rendition of Into the Mystic.

I don't like crowd participation when the crowd consists of the four of us.

I read this morning that Habana will be missing the Fiji match with a knee injury. Hope it's not too bad and he can get back after one away.

Good Cup so far. No upsets, but several close ones. England and Scotland barely squeak by and Japan gave France all it wanted. Springboks get past Wales by ONE (the last several between these two have been close, though, so I didn't really see this as a surprise). Finally, although the outcome was never in doubt, USA played much tougher against Ireland than I expected; still no offense (despite benching Malifa), but a LOT of defense.

Bryan didn't really impress in Super Rugby this year and Springbok fans think that he and Smit should have stayed home. He's bulked up, but he's getting a bit long in the tooth and a step slower than at his prime.

Springbok rugby is going to look a lot different next year.

The talk last week was that this is the game that would finally expose the Springboks as a team well past its sell-by date. Several key players were out with injuries, including Matfield and Habana. Fiji was talking up their chances all week (link) and even the local South African press was on an upset alert.

Vegas had the Springboks at 22-point favorites, but most people thought it would be a lot closer game. It wasn't.

The Boks silenced their critics with a rugby clinic. I'm not sure what happened the last game, but the Springboks arrived in New Zealand today. Fiji is physically impressive and athletic. They are very fast, especially when they can open the field up and play the loose game that they enjoy.

But bulletin board material has the same effect around the world. The Springboks out-muscled Fiji on both sides of the ball, playing bone-crushing defense. But they also out-played them at their own game, running Fiji off their feet and holding them without a try.

There will be a lot of people on opposing sides who go to bed tonight feeling much less certain about their chances in the tournament, including the All-Blacks.

South Africa 49
Fiji 3

(Game report: Boks show Fiji no mercy)

Wow, I cant believe Ireland take down the Aussies. Very low scoring. Very fun cup to watch so far as well.

Not really all that surprised. Australia was flattered in the Tri-Nations because SA and NZ put up B teams against them. I would be very surprised if the Wallabies get through to the final.

Agreed. While better than recent incarnations, Oz is a little bit of fool's gold. Perhaps if the RWC had been next year, they'd be more dangerous. Ireland, on the other hand, has been a little underrated and definitely had something to prove.

I was thrilled to see the Boks score and am pissed off the the NMR and I fell asleep on the couch and didn't make it out to the pub to see both of these matches starting at 2:00 this morning.

Samoa gives South Africa all it can handle, but the Boks move on thanks to goal kicking. Wow, I'm in pain having watched the defense played by both sides.

Looking forward to a similar (though undoubtably slower) display when Ireland and Italy play to see who goes home on Sunday.
