Rosters turned in tomorrow. 15 guys have a realistic shot at 12 spots at this point.

Boathouse order in production. Webstore coming soon. Very excited.

First preview of the team is this Sunday against 1823 Columbus Rugby.

Following weekend is another preview in Akron. On the 28th we play in the Larrimer Cup in Mechanicsburg against PSU, Michigan and ND. Then it's off to Philly.

First preview of the OSU sevens teams took place yesterday against 1823 Columbus Rugby. Our first side had a convincing win in the 1st game, 38-12. The second side struggled with defense in the 2nd game and was thumped pretty good. The first side recorded a 21-19 win in the third game and the second side bounced back with a 24-14 win in the final match of the day. Solid effort on the day but there is definite work to be done...especially on fitness and defense. We scrimmage Akron this Saturday in another warm-up before the Larrimer Cup and the USA Sevens CRC.

POOL A PREVIEW

OHIO STATE

Ohio State cut their teeth at last year's competition and, to the surprise of many, made it into the top eight. This year they return at least five players from last year's squad, however they will likely miss speedster Josh Holland, who was injured early in the 15s season and is not expect back for Philly. Who is expected back is Nate Ebner. The former USA U20 fullback left rugby to play football at Ohio State, returned to rugby at the 2010 CRC 7s and was outstanding. Football developed Ebner's strength and aggressiveness and his rugby skills came back quickly, as he led the Buckeyes to the quarters. This year, some wonder if Ebner could be recruiting a few more from the gridiron to try football's cousin. Also expect big Nick Kelly, Kyle Harmon and Scott Mesi to contribute. And Nevin Heard is a freshman new to rugby, but was a running back on the state high school champions; he may find, as Ebner did, that 7s and football mix very well

Just some flat out wrong info here...

Josh "speedster" Holland didn't break 5.0 in the 40 last year...he's more quick than fast. And he is not playing this year because he is not enrolled at OSU...not because of an injury. We've replace him with plenty of speed...we actually timed in the 40 last night and our three starting forwards are all 4.6 guys (and we time our 40s with ball in hand). And Nick Kelly quit rugby altogether after the fall, although we think he might be back next year. What is accurate is we have a couple of football guys out who are great athletes and we found out that Nevin has been cleared to play and has a good shot of making the starting seven on the wing.

Final tune-up is this weekend in Mechanicsburg...The Inaugural Larrimer Cup Invitational Rugby 7's. OSU's schedule is:

9:20 AM - Notre Dame
11:00 AM - Penn State
12:40 PM - Michigan
2:20 PM - Quarters
4:45 PM - Finals

Interview With Ohio State Assistant Rugby Coach Wes Campbell About Upcoming 7s Invitational Tournament

by TwistNHook on Jun 1, 2011 5:30 PM PDT in California Golden Bears Olympic Sports

Fresh off of their National Championship victory a week or so ago, Cal Rugby is back! This weekend, they have a squad out at the 7s Invitational Tournament in Philadelphia. 7s is a different game than the standard 15s. For example, there are only 7 players on a side instead of 15. The Olympics will be holding Rugby 7s in Rio in 2016, so it is time to start boning up on your 7s knowledge. The players that you watch on national television this weekend might be representing the Red, White, And Blue in 5 years. The schedule for Cal for Saturday has already been set:
The Golden Bears face Ohio State at 10:20 a.m. ET, Louisiana State at 2:10 p.m. ET and Penn State at 4:06 p.m. ET in Pool A, with live TV coverage broadcast locally of the Bears against the Tigers at 11 a.m. PT on VERSUS followed by Cal against the Nittany Lions at 1 p.m. PT on NBC.
Note that that is eastern time, so the first match up is at 7:20 AM in the morning! Ai! Yes, Cal will be taking on the Buckeyes early this Saturday morning. We contacted SBNation's OSU site AlongTheOlentangy to discuss easily the most burning topic for all Buckeyes fans right now: collegiate rugby.
Inexplicably, they were busy. Something about sweatervests, I didn't quite catch what they said. They did say that they knew somebody who followed the sport and would have that person email me. The next day we received an email from Wes Campbell, the Assistant Coach for the OSU rugby team! That's not just somebody who closely followed rugby, that's a coach of the team! Here is more info on Mr. Campbell:
