2011 Luke Fickell Press Conferences

I wasn't reassured by the way he discussed the timeouts. Down by 2 scores, sure timeouts can help you save time on offense. But using them after the other team runs the ball and is tackled in-bounds short of the sticks saves about 45 seconds. There are a lot of ways to use less than 45 seconds between plays on offense.

I agree 100% and always have been taught that you use the TOs on D because on O you can control the clock by doing things like spiking the ball, getting first downs(I know this might have been a stretch), and running out of bounds.

Reality is a bitch. I was expecting a tough transition while a lot of people here thought that it would be smooth sailing. I got blasted for saying that we could win maybe 9 games after our performance against Akron... I would be thrilled with 9 wins now. I was skeptical becuase I was wondering if we were that good or Akron was that bad. Well, Akron is that bad.

A new coach with a new QB and other suspended key players will take a huge toll on this team's W/L record. Fick's never been in a position like this where every word he says is scrutinized. If he can't handle it, he shouldn't be here next year; it's that simple. I love the dude a DC, but not once has he has he coached or spoken like he's ready to be the HC of tOSU yet. So let's see the product he puts on the field this week... if it's hot garbage like last week, then yikes.

Regardless, fuck scUM and fuck Bucky. If we can't/don't sell out our games the rest of the year, then fuck the bandwagon fans too.

Q. You don't see an overwhelming upside of Braxton over Joe right now?
COACH FICKELL: We could. If he could go out and make some plays on the football, we will. I still don't have a lack of belief in what Joe can do at times, too. We got to put Joe in the right situation, got to help him out from the defensive side of the ball as well as of the offensive side of the ball, too.

I read that quote and think it tips a bit towards Joe starting this week. I definitely think Miller will see double the snaps this week. IMHO he should see nearly all of them.

This is a great point. I originally didn't think the whole timeout issue was that big of a deal, mainly because I thought there may be other more immediate issues (e.g., personnel decisions, playcalling). But LF's answer on the timeout issue was, as BB73 mildly put it, not reassuring.

What does he mean we need the defense to help Joe out more at times? How much more can you expect the defense to help they got two picks and we had pretty good field position throughout the game

Bingo. The defense gave the offense very good field position on a number of drives on Saturday night, and it gave the offense absolutely phenomenal field position on a few drives. Seems that LF is trying to instill the team concept here and prevent people from blaming Joe as the QB.

While he didn't exactly set the world on fire, I think Braxton did "go out and make some plays on the football" against Miami. He had several runs leading up to the fumble where the chains were moved. Joe B (and this isn't bashing him, it's just stating what I perceive to have happened), on the other hand, really only moved the offense when he was handing the ball off. Which Braxton certainly did as well. I'm not sure what else LF is looking for here in order for him to elevate Braxton over Joe B--it seems the metric he has identified tips the scales in Braxton's favor.

What I have a problem with is coach fickel saying "we are going to have them compete still"... Are you kidding me? All spring, summer and Fall camp isn't enough?

Having a competition week 4 of the season? ehh I don't know about that...

Look we can stop the clock on offense with first downs... We can't stop the clock on defense. Reminds me of Marty Morningwig opting to go on defense in overtime first with the detroit lions.

I must admit that reading these press conferences always help me out on an emotional level (so to say). Oftentimes, I can find myself critiquing the coaches and losing sight of the fact that they're human beings. The loss this past week didn't just slide off of Luke's shoulders. I'm sure there are things that will bother him for some time. Not an easy job, being an NCAA Div1 HC.

This is entirely coach-speak. He knows who his starter is, he just doesn't want to specify so that his backup doesn't slack off - heck, both guys could figure their positions are set and coast through practice. When you have a team that needs to get better, you can't give them any reason to let up, not in games or during the week.

It's all a bunch of mind games with his players, and probably a slight amount of gamesmanship with Colorado. HCLF knows what he's doing.

re: the clock management...

Not only can you make the case for using a timeout or two during their last drive, maybe with 2 or 3 minutes left, just on normal clock management techniques, but also to calm everyone down and make sure the D knew what they were doing.

In a basketball game, that's one way timeouts are used, you get back on your heels and you get dunked on a couple of times, time out! stop the clock! huddle up! and let's figure out what the he// we're doing...

Like maybe call a couple of sell out blitzes in there.

Once it got down to 40 seconds, it was over. They were in field goal range if nothing else.

Now, do I really believe they would have won? No. But you show the players that you don't give up on the game until you absolutely have to. I mean, if we were on offense, would we take a knee? Hell no, we're throwing it downfield.

But really, would more timeouts make the Indianapolis Colts 2 and Oh instead of Oh and 2? Nah. We miss our quarterback, and we need to anoint a new one, and not magically make our mop-up guy into a starting quarterback. That kind of magic is not going to happen when he's 25 already. He's already been coached up.

I say Braxton Miller #1, Taylor Graham #2 and Kenny G #3.

Coach Fick, you'll look back on these days later and you'll shake your head. You're learning more day by day.

day by day.

He gets better and better.

That's from the Husker Prayer the guys say before the game. :wink2:[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX1PafJoOk8"]Husker Prayer[/ame]

Folks, if I'm stepping on toes in this thread just tell me and I'll butt out. I know it's no fun to go through growing pains, and I know you guys have some legit gripes right now, but as long as everyone bears in mind that Fickell is essentially a Redshirt Freshman starting at QB, and expects the same good/bad/ugly out of him that you'd expect from that kid, you'll be OK.

To be blunt, anyone who has watched a lot of college football in the past and also watched the last two games could only conclude that Bauserman simply isn't capable of playing Big Ten-level football. I'm sure he's a nice guy and a good teammate that can otherwise help the young QBs, but he just does not appear to have the natural ability or mindset to get the job done. He did look good in the Akron game, but that was Akron, a team that has since revealed itself as completely bereft of defensive ability. With Joe, even in last season's mop-up duty, I did not see anything that would lead me to believe he can be relied on as a starter.

With Miller, he has not demonstrated an ability to maintain possession of the football, but he has shown the athleticism and natural ability necessary to play at this level. He needs to improve his awareness and decision making, which he can begin to do while being thrown directly into the fire. That would probably be my choice at this time. On the other hand, I could understand not playing him if the coaching staff simply has no confidence in his ability to protect the ball and wants to emphasize not turning the ball over by holding him out until he shows improvement in that regard. We still have a solid defense, playmakers returning after week 5, and a Big Ten slate ahead of us, after all (though, IMO, after you've burnt his redshirt, you've basically committed to playing the kid).

What I cannot understand, however, is continuing to go with Joe after the past two weeks. You have two other QBs over there besides Joe and Braxton. Give one of them a shot if you don't want to play Miller yet.

The absolute worst thing that can happen going forward is to continue on the path we're on now, where Bauserman gets the majority of the snaps and Miller comes in briefly only to be yanked off the field the moment he makes a mistake, even mid-drive. That can only devastate the kid's confidence, which will have negative ramifications down the road. To be blunt again, I'm afraid we're witnessing pretty drastic mismanagement of the QB situation. That said, it's still early and dealing with the QB position surely isn't easy, given all the playmakers that are out due to suspension and injury, particularly at WR. But the bottom line is that we need a decisive plan that the team sticks with at QB. Is it Miller time? Announce it. Is it time to give Guiton a shot? Announce it and give him a shot. After everything that's gone on over the past many months, this team really, really needs stability, confidence, and decisiveness from its leadership.

And to be clear, I'm fine with a two-QB system when the purpose of that system is to use the distinct and unique strengths of each QB. That's what we did with Jackson and Germaine back in the day, and that's what I saw with Leak and a young Tebow in Florida in '06. I even saw Toledo doing that two weeks ago. I believe it can work with the right two QBs when done properly. What we're doing right now, however, is not that. It's taking one QB out and putting another in without purpose only because neither is getting the job done and it just feels schizophrenic.

I know Grad suggested his belief that the most recent depth chart is merely gamesmanship designed to make Colorado prepare for two QBs that are stylistically different. I hope that is the case and that we're moving away from a two-QB system that is apparently in place only because there's no one QB of choice.

I feel like Fickell is still playing the role of assistant coach. He's leading by committee rather than taking charge and making this HIS team. It's understandable, he's following a hall of fame Coach; let alone it being his first year calling the shots. I'm hoping he learns from his mistakes soon and can move forward with confidence.

This press conference provides very little insight into how he, personally, will react as a Head Coach. Hopefully Saturday we'll see some changes.

Why the heck doesn't Joe B have to prove he can make some plays on the football field?

He made ZERO Sat night.
The slightest hint of pressure and the ball got thrown away.
The throwaway in the end zone on the first field goal drive could have been a completion if he had that playmaker mentality (or hasn't had it schooled out of him)
The ball to Stoneburner in the end zone that all the talking heads refer to as a drop was a terrible throw. All he needed was a nice soft toss. Looked a little panicked or rushed to me.

When one QB is getting us 2.4 yards per play, and the other one 6.4 (something like that anyway) I know who I'm playing.

Having listened to and read the past few tuesday press conferences LF has had, he sure doesn't manage a press conference like JT does. When Tressel answered a question, he articulately avoided giving much meat to his answer. With Fickell, I get that he's trying to do that, but it just never comes out well and leaves you almost angry at his answer, or lack there of. I know a lot of reporters, interviewers often got annoyed with JT's press conference warfare but at least you could tip your hat to his sly answers.
