To be blunt, anyone who has watched a lot of college football in the past and also watched the last two games could only conclude that Bauserman simply isn't capable of playing Big Ten-level football. I'm sure he's a nice guy and a good teammate that can otherwise help the young QBs, but he just does not appear to have the natural ability or mindset to get the job done. He did look good in the Akron game, but that was Akron, a team that has since revealed itself as completely bereft of defensive ability. With Joe, even in last season's mop-up duty, I did not see anything that would lead me to believe he can be relied on as a starter.
With Miller, he has not demonstrated an ability to maintain possession of the football, but he has shown the athleticism and natural ability necessary to play at this level. He needs to improve his awareness and decision making, which he can begin to do while being thrown directly into the fire. That would probably be my choice at this time. On the other hand, I could understand not playing him if the coaching staff simply has no confidence in his ability to protect the ball and wants to emphasize not turning the ball over by holding him out until he shows improvement in that regard. We still have a solid defense, playmakers returning after week 5, and a Big Ten slate ahead of us, after all (though, IMO, after you've burnt his redshirt, you've basically committed to playing the kid).
What I cannot understand, however, is continuing to go with Joe after the past two weeks. You have two other QBs over there besides Joe and Braxton. Give one of them a shot if you don't want to play Miller yet.
The absolute worst thing that can happen going forward is to continue on the path we're on now, where Bauserman gets the majority of the snaps and Miller comes in briefly only to be yanked off the field the moment he makes a mistake, even mid-drive. That can only devastate the kid's confidence, which will have negative ramifications down the road. To be blunt again, I'm afraid we're witnessing pretty drastic mismanagement of the QB situation. That said, it's still early and dealing with the QB position surely isn't easy, given all the playmakers that are out due to suspension and injury, particularly at WR. But the bottom line is that we need a decisive plan that the team sticks with at QB. Is it Miller time? Announce it. Is it time to give Guiton a shot? Announce it and give him a shot. After everything that's gone on over the past many months, this team really, really needs stability, confidence, and decisiveness from its leadership.
And to be clear, I'm fine with a two-QB system when the purpose of that system is to use the distinct and unique strengths of each QB. That's what we did with Jackson and Germaine back in the day, and that's what I saw with Leak and a young Tebow in Florida in '06. I even saw Toledo doing that two weeks ago. I believe it can work with the right two QBs when done properly. What we're doing right now, however, is not that. It's taking one QB out and putting another in without purpose only because neither is getting the job done and it just feels schizophrenic.
I know Grad suggested his belief that the most recent depth chart is merely gamesmanship designed to make Colorado prepare for two QBs that are stylistically different. I hope that is the case and that we're moving away from a two-QB system that is apparently in place only because there's no one QB of choice.
