Thought we needed a thread on this, even though Youngstown State is not in it this year.

America's Team, Appalachian State won a nail-biter, 28-27, over James Madison (who was National Champ before App State won the last two). JMU drove down inside the 10 yd line with under a minute left, needing only a field goal to win. They ran the ball, fumbled, and App State recovered to preserve the victory.

Elsewhere in the lower bracket, Wofford (the only team in the playoffs to beat App State) traveled to Montana and upset the #3 seed in their house. Eastern Washington traveled to McNeese State and upset the #2 seed. After travelling to Louisiana last week, Eastern Wash travels to Boone this week. Gotta think all that long-distance travel will take its toll.

Because of the upsets, App State has home field all the way to the finals. A three-peat now appears much more likely.

GO Mountaineers!! Appalachian is hot, Hot, HOT!!!

Down to eight teams, four of whom will go home this weekend.

North Dakota State is an interesting bunch. They beat Minnesota 37-24 and finished their season with only one loss. That loss was a home game against (6-5) Youngstown State, 27-24. NDSU hosts Lehigh tomorrow.

Northern Iowa lost at Iowa State 20-19 in the final minute of the game. Iowa State handed Oklahoma State its only defeat. UNI plays at Montana tonight on ESPN.

I wonder who will get voted into the championship game? Oh wait...

semi-finals:

Montana at Sam Houston State (Friday, ESPN)

The Bearkats (yep, with a k) are the highest scoring team in the nation and have home field but the Big Sky champions are playoff regulars and I question the toughness of the Southland Conference. Won't be shocked if the Griz win one on the road.

Georgia Southern at North Dakota State (Saturday, ESPNU)

GSU is another playoff regular but NDSU is at home and beat Minnesota by 13 points. They did, however, suffer their only loss at home versus YSU. Another case where a road win wouldn't stun me.

Playoffs are taking a decidedly western tilt this year. Unless Georgia Southern can capitalize on the road. They are coming back into their Paul Johnson form. Still running the triple option. Tough to stop unless you've seen it before. Hate to root for the Stink, but conference loyalties dictate. Go GSU!!

NDSU's only loss is to YSU, so if a>b, and b>c, therefore...YSU could win the national championship. Go North Dakota State! :wink2:

Montana-Sam Houston play tonight.

Montana finally gets on the board but they still don't seem to have an answer for Sam Houston's offense. I thought the Griz would put up a better fight but so far it is not looking that way.

Little by little, Montana has climbed back into the game. A pick six never hurts, either.

31-21, SHSU, 3rd.

Sam Houston's QB has delusions of grandeur. Too often as the game progresses he has "read" keep it instead of handing the ball to Flanders, one of the best RBs at any level. Flanders killed Montana early, and is still gaining chunks but he's not getting the ball as much as he should.

SHSU's lead is down to 3, 31-28.

Sam Houston got smart just in time, giving the ball repeatedly to Tim Flanders in the 4th quarter and playing keep away with the Griz. They even went for 4th and 1 at midfield with 2 minutes left. Not ony did he get it, he had the awareness to go down before going out of bounds to keep the clock running. I love smart football.

Flanders has 277 yards rushing tonight.

Flanders has some great footwork. Fun to watch.

Why, thank you, neighbor!

Flanders is only a sophomore, but man is he smart. He is the reason Sam Houston is advancing to the championship game for the first time in school history. Great RB, and understands the game. He gained 287 yards, and "only" averaged 11 yards per carry.

He transferred from Kansas State. Don't know why he left the Wildcats.
