2011 BP Football Awards - Winners and All-American Team

The George

Wisconsin's Montee Ball, a Heisman Trophy finalist, has been named as the winner of the seventh annual George Award for the nation's best collegiate running back. Ball's 38 TDs are the second-highest total ever for any FBS player, behind Barry Sanders' total of 44 (39 officially, plus 5 in his bowl game). The top three vote-getters were named on all ballots except one.

Whitney Mercilus of Illinois has been named as the the winner of BP's seventh annual Big Daddy Award (named after former Buckeye great "Big Daddy" Dan Wilkinson) as the nation's best collegiate defensive lineman. He was also the recipient of the Ted Hendricks Award for 2011.

The Assassin

Congratulations to defensive back Tyrann Mathieu of LSU, a Heisman finalist, on being named the winner of the Assassin Award this year, which takes its name from the nickname of legendary hitter Jack Tatum. The 'Honey Badger' also won the Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player, while teammate Morris Claiborne was the Thorpe Award as the nation's top DB. LSU also claimed the Assassin last year when Patrick Peterson won it.

LSU's Brad Wing, a freshman from Australia, has been named the winner of the Skladany Award as the nation's best punter in 2011. He averaged 44.1 yards per punt, and opponents only had 7 yards in punt returns for the season. Congrats to Brad on winning BP's seventh annual Skladany Award as the nation's best collegiate punter.

The Griffin Player of the Year

Voters selected Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III as the winner of BP's Archie Griffin Player of the Year. We will find out tomorrow who wins the Heisman, but RG3 (not believed to be related to Archie) has already won the Davey O'Brien best QB Award.
