2010 TSUN News offseason (football)

SHOT: They could get some help in the secondary.

CHASER: Even with a TON of help at safety their secondary play could still remain comical at times.

So yes RR speaks the truth on this issue.

Damn it....once again I'm hearing UM news and thinking it has to be shenanigans.

- "Then the safety position is kind of wide open. That's the one position where we may have a few freshmen... true freshmen... with an opportunity to contribute. That's a little scary to say that, but we really feel confident that the guys that we signed are smart guys and tough guys and if they can learn quickly in camp then they can help us in the secondary."

:slappy:

Rhetorical question but in terms of pre season coach speak they are supposed to paint even the most grim of situations in the most flattering light possible up to and including pushing the envelope of credibility right?

Well when the best spin a coach can come up with is telling you the safety position is wide open, true freshman are the best hope you have and that he really hopes they learn quickly in fall camp...you might just want hold off on fronting the cash for the NC game tickets.

NCAA hearing won't keep Rich Rodriguez from U-M's two-a-days

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said he has had to adjust the Wolverines' preseason practice schedule to accommodate his appearance before the NCAA Committee on Infractions later this month. Rodriguez will be among Michigan representatives who will be in Seattle on Aug. 14 for the hearing. In May, Michigan self-imposed two years of probation, docked the football program 130 hours of practice over two years and reduced its quality control staff from five to three.
Rodriguez said Monday during the Big Ten kickoff that he will leave for Seattle on Aug. 13, and will return for the first day of two-a-day practices on Aug. 15.
"That (Aug. 14) normally would be first day of two-a-days, so we've adjusted our schedule so I won't miss any practices," Rodriguez said. "We'll still have two-a-days -- it will just be the next day. We'll keep it from being a distraction. I'll have to go and do it ... and am looking forward to meeting with them and furthering that process along."
Michigan opens fall camp Aug. 9.
The NCAA Committee on Infractions could accept Michigan's self-imposed sanctions or impose additional penalties.

Michigan's top rusher, Michael Shaw, not yet eligible; Stonum Update

Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez was asked about the running back situation today at the Big Ten preseason meetings, and he notably omitted junior Michael Shaw from his comments.
Rodriguez said Vincent Smith ?should be 100% for camp healthy, which is key for us there. And then Mike Cox had a really good spring, and he?s a guy that we?re really looking forward to progress. And Fitz Toussaint had a really good spring and was injured last year. Those three, in particular, should be guys that will lead the charge for us.?
Among active players, Shaw is U-M?s leading career rusher with 84 carries for 400 yards (4.8 average) and two touchdowns.
Rodriguez, who said he expected all players except Will Heininger to be healthy to start fall camp next week, was asked about Shaw?s status.
?We?re still waiting on summer school, and we don?t comment on our guys academically,? he said. ?They still have two weeks of summer school left, for some of our players, so we?ll keep you in touch.?
Camp change because of NCAA: Michigan?s looming meeting with the NCAA infractions committee has caused a change in the team?s training-camp schedule.
Rodriguez will join the U-M delegation for an Aug. 14 meeting with the committee to discuss the five major NCAA allegations facing the program.
?When we?ll be in front of the committee, that normally would be our first day of two-a-days, but we have adjusted our schedule so I won?t miss any practices,? Rodriguez said. ?We?ll still have two-a-days; it?ll just be the next day. ... We?ll keep it from being a distraction. I?ll have to go and do it, and it?s something that we all, at the university, have to go and look forward to meeting with them and furthering that process along.?
Michigan has disputed one of the five allegations: that Rodriguez didn?t promote an atmosphere of compliance.
Rodriguez said he plans to fly to Seattle on Aug. 13.
Stonum update: Wide receiver Darryl Stonum, who spent three days in jail in June for repeated probation violations, will not face more team punishment for his transgressions, Rodriguez said.
?No, I think he faced that discipline, and he informed us when it was happening,? Rodriguez said.

Tater Tots not showing up to workouts...... losing his teammates?

im guessing this will be in the hall of shame soon

Woolfolk: Forcier's lack of attendance at workouts puts Robinson ahead in QB battle | The Michigan Daily

CHICAGO ? For months, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez has been adamant that the quarterback competition between sophomores Denard Robinson and Tate Forcier is wide open.

But during day two of the Big Ten football media days, senior cornerback Troy Woolfolk said that isn't necessarily the case.

"Denard has been out there through the thick and thin and been out there all the time regardless if he's hurting," Woolfolk said. "And Tate, he tries to come out, but he's not as consistent as Denard is. And that's allowed Denard to jump a little bit ahead of Tate and I think that Tate's going to have to do a lot of work to catch back up to Denard in camp this year."

According to Woolfolk, what was once a neck-and-neck race between Forcier and Robinson for the starting quarterback job has begun to tip in Robinson's favor. And a big reason for that, Woolfolk said, is the team's perception of players who don't show up to voluntary workouts.

"I personally have a lack of respect for them," Woolfolk said. "The outlook on them is kind of diseased. Like you don't want to be hanging around those people because they have bad work ethic. But at the same time, it's my role to try to persuade them to come out more."

According to Woolfolk, Forcier hasn't shown up to as many workouts as him and the other seniors feel he should have, and Woolfolk said it's hurting his teammates' perception of their signal caller.

"The only reason he's not really labeled as diseased is because of the way he was able to carry the team last year before we started losing. People still trust him a little bit, but he's starting to lose that trust."

And by all accounts, Robinson, who has shown up to workouts consistently since they started, is earning that trust. As a fill-in for Forcier last year, Robinson showed promise as a runner and athlete, but was erratic throwing the ball, throwing for four interceptions and two touchdowns.

Robinson has greatly improved his passing during the offseason, but, according to some players, he has also made strides off the field.

"He?s definitely taken on some leadership," fifth-year senior offensive lineman Steve Schilling said. "He?s there every day working hard. He?s been a guy that doesn?t complain. He makes you want to play for him, and he has those qualities to be a special leader and a special quarterback."

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday that he warned Forcier early in the offseason that the competition for the starting job would be stiff.

"I talked to him in the spring about this: 'You're getting a challenge from Denard, you're getting a challenge from (freshman) Devin (Gardner). If you're a true competitor, we'll see how you respond.' That challenge will continue in August."

Forcier still has a chance to respond during camp, but as of now it appears, at least in the players' eyes, the once-wide-open competition has a leader.

This has been going on throughout his time at UM, not watching film, blowing off workouts, etc.

UM insiders have hinted at it, but Troy just revealed to everyone how bad it is (this isn't a guy just going through the motions at times, he's flat out ignoring his responsibilities).

Denard was sprinting past him on the depth chart and it didn't change his behavior.

I doubt you could get 1/1 odds from BB73 on a transfer in Tater's future, particularly if Devin steals some of the backup reps from Tate.
