2010 TSUN News offseason (football)

From Joe Schad (schadjoe) on Twitter

RichRod here in Ann Arbor today: "Our players have a chip on their shoulder. Our coaches have a chip on their shoulder."

UM DE Ryan Van Bergen: "It's a huge season for Michigan football. We've had two down years and this year needs to be a big bounceback."

Sounds to me today like you may see a lot of WR-Slash role out of Denard Robinson this year

Defensively sounds like RichRod's plan is to have GRob simplify to be able to play mass youth

Spring Has Sprung | mgoblog

Lengthy recap of first presser of spring practice. A small sampling:
Injuries: David Molk and Vincent Smith are out for spring with knee injuries.
Position changes: Cameron Gordon has been moved to safety, as has Teric Jones. This means Troy Woolfolk and Justin Turner will both play corner this spring. There's the potential that one or both of them can move to safety down the road.
This is where Boo Boo really hurts them. Turner belongs at safety.
The defense should be able to take a step forward in the second year under the same defensive coordinator. A few schemes will be tweaked, but they'll try to keep them simpler, because there's a good chance some true freshmen will have to fill in this fall. The coaches are going to try for a bigger rotation defensively, so more guys will see the field.
Gardner's throwing motion looks improved from the end of his high school season. Once he is able to get actual coaching, it should continue getting better.

Rivals $

Basic video from practice, so not much to take away from this. Some observations:

  • Devin Gardner #7 has improved since the fall, though most look good against "air"
  • Devin & Tate hit their swing passes and stationary downfield targets, while Denard struggled.
  • OL still looks undersized.
  • LB looks good but Mouton/Ezeh looked good in shorts last year.
  • Roh has added some size, should be a nice player for them as expected.

The funny thing is, a sizeable portion of their fanbase expects their defense to get better this year. That's an awful lot of position shuffling. They're gonna be breaking in new safeties, at least one total newcomer at CB and somehow have to replace the far-and-away best player on that awful defense. Outside of (maybe) Roh, they don't have a lot of talent on the edge...certainly nobody capable of replacing Graham's production. Martin's a good player, but if they move him from inside, they're gonna have to count on Campbell inside and he showed significant deficiencies last year despite his size and raw talent. The LBers are still a big question mark and they're gonna have to replace Stevie Brown who was actually (possibly) their second best defender. There's a lot of raw talent in the defensive backfield, but, they're really lacking in experience.

Offensively, it'll be interesting to watch tater. He regressed as the season went on. Was that just his gunslinger mentality creating turnovers, or was it him being dinged up and feeling he had to make plays? People thinking shoelaces is anything but a gimmick at QB are fooling themselves. If tater struggles and they have to turn to a raw frosh (Gardner), they're in big trouble. tOSU could mask Pryor's rawness because they had a stud TB and could go to a power running game. They're gonna have a gaggle of undersized jitterbugs and freshman. Not to mention questions at WR...Stonum (dropsies), Hemingway (health), Roundtree is a stick figure and is always a good hit away from being snapped in half.

7-5 would be an accomplishment.

Its to the point where I feel stupid trying to point out their stupidity on a point by point basis.

I'm just going to keep rolling out the one posters line; Talk big, lose, whine, repeat. That just sums it up perfectly except maybe I'd replace the word "big" with "insanely unrealistic and fantastical projections" but big works.
