cont'dAs far as the Michigan defensive players are concerned, feel free to call their scheme whatever you'd like.
After all, all they want is improvement over what was a forgettable defensive performance last season.
While they are talking about being versatile and situational, the Wolverines' base will be a 3-3-5 -- three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs.
Well, at least it seems it will be a 3-3-5.
"You can say 3-3 whatever, but seriously, it's like our own defense," Michigan defensive lineman Greg Banks said after the spring game. "As a unit, we're coming together. It's fun. I like it. We're doing different things, I'm inside, I'm outside. We've got different guys playing different positions. When it comes to this fall, we're going to surprise people."
Banks said initially the defenders were perplexed.
"At first, everybody's skeptical," he said. "We're all like, 'Man, we keep switching defenses, we don't know what we're playing, we don't have an identity.' And this year we're making our own, totally new defense that nobody has seen before.
"I guess you could say it's a bit of a situational defense. You've got to be able to adjust. You adapt to your offensive personnel. You can call it anything, but it's the formation of a lot of things."
It seems the only thing consistent among the defensive players is that they don't know what to label their defense.
"I don't know (what to call it)," said defensive end Ryan Van Bergen. "It's got some aspects of a 3-3-5, some aspects of a 4-3 ... it's just our Michigan defense right now. It's putting the best 11 guys out there who can play defense together and I really like it like that. It's really interesting to see a group of 11 guys and then we just sort it out from there.
