2010 TSUN News offseason (football)

Rich Rodriguez keeps quarterbacks a secret, plus Troy Woolfolk could play for Michigan football team next year

In one week, Rich Rodriguez expects to know who will start at quarterback for the Michigan football team. He might be the only one.
Rodriguez said he plans to keep his plans hidden for a while. He will probably inform the three candidates of his decision the day before Michigan opens the season against UConn, if not a little sooner. As for the rest of us?
?Nobody else will know until 3:30 p.m.,? Rodriguez said Wednesday, before clarifying the information. ?What time is kickoff? 3:36? I stand corrected.?
Denard Robinson, Tate Forcier and Devin Gardner are competing for the job. Usually by this point in summer camp, Rodriguez starts giving the starter more snaps with the first team, going with a 60-40 split.
But he said Wednesday, the number of snaps for all three were relatively even

I wish he would just name a starter and let them get the reps in. Guess that's asking to much.

I wouldn't believe what he tells the media. I'm sure he knows who is going to start, and I'm sure they are getting the reps.

Wouldn't go that far. Remember last year when Eric Mangini thought he was getting an advantage by not naming a starter, so everyone would have to prepare for multiple quarterbacks?

Yes, I thought it was a stupid move also.

However, do you think that RR is actually smarter than Eric Mangini?

RR may very well think that he's getting an advantage over UConn by not naming a starter. That way UConn doesn't know whether to prep for a kind of fast QB who can't throw the ball at all, a slower QB who can almost throw a little bit, or an unproven freshman who may or may not be able to throw or pass the ball.

RR may think that having that "confusion" with UConn is great--and maybe that confusion is more valuable than giving one guy more reps.

Besides, by not naming a starter, he's postponing the Forcier transfer by at least 2 weeks.

Not naming a starter is not an advantge. It's abundantly clear both tater and shoelaces are going to see ample time, so teams will be prepared to face both. Year three and he still doesn't have a clear-cut QB = failure.

I agree with you 100%--that's the intelligent answer. And that's why I'm not sure it's RR's answer.
