Gonna Party Like it's 1996?
1996 Season.
After opening the season 4-0, U-M then went 3-3 over the next stretch ... ... ... so The Wolverines were 7-3 and on a 2-game losing streak (a 9-3 slog-loss at Purdue, and a 29-17 bad-home-loss to PSU) as they headed down to Columbus to face the #2 ranked, 10-0 Buckeyes.
The result -- Michigan stunned OSU, 13-9
Wikipedia:
The Buckeyes had high expectations again entering the 1996 (Michigan-Ohio State) contest. They boasted an unblemished 10?0 record and were ranked #2 in the nation as they entered the finale with Michigan. When Ohio State jumped to a 9?0 halftime lead, the OSU crowd sensed a special finish and perhaps a rise to #1. The Wolverines' defense shut the Buckeyes out in the second half while Brian Griese replaced the struggling Scott Driesbach and led Michigan to 13 unanswered points and another victory over their rivals, 13?9. The game would turn out to be the Buckeyes' only loss of the season and ended up costing them a chance at a share of the national championship.
***Note: the purpose here is not to find exact-replicas of the 2010 season ... that's impossible. But Michigan fans felt just a hope-less going into the 1996 game and the
2000 game as many of you do now -- that's the partial-point.
The rest of the point -- despite how disconsolate U-M fans felt going in, U-M went down to Columbus and pulled out seemingly-unlikely wins.
