2010 tOSU Defense Discussion

To reemphasize, they need to create more pressure in the trenches or this defense is going to get worked by any legitimate offensive line. Does that cause problems for the Minnesotas and Michigans of the world? No. But if the stars align and they find themselves playing in any legitimate bowl game, it could be very problematic.

Agree. While we could chalk this one bad game up as maybe a fluke, the DL has really struggled to get sacks all year. 8 sacks in 7 games is honestly pretty terrible for any elite defense. The DL has gotten good pressure before, but until they can start getting production as well, teams will have time to pick them apart with shorter throws. This is the key to the season right now. The secondary is banged up and these guys need to step up, Cam Heyward in particular.

I don't want to be harshed, but as a guy who was thought to be one of the better DL in Tressel's years here, he has really melted into the background of the season as far as impact goes. We all knew he would have to be a key to an NC run, but honestly sometimes when I watch the game I forget that he's playing out there. I'm really hoping that he can start to have an impact and verty strong finish.

Here is a good post from 11W about wiscy's offensive scheme and our failure to stop it. It seems that they have drawn many of the same conclusions I have, but in a much clearer fashion. The LBs weren't given the best chance for success, and Orhian Johnson was completely lost out there.

There are some useful illustrations as well.

Football: OSU defense looking to bounce back
Saturday, October 23, 2010
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The physical beating Ohio State's defense took last week in Wisconsin was obvious.

The question now, heading into a game today against Purdue, is how much mental damage was done.

The Badgers steamrolled a proud Buckeyes unit, pounding out 184 rushing yards in a 31-18 win. Ohio State had come in giving up an average of 78.7 rushing yards and 13.5 points. With 104 yards, running back John Clay became the first player in 30 games to rush for more than 100 against OSU.

It left many of the Buckeyes in a state of shock. Afterward, defensive tackle Dexter Larimore answered questions in a quiet monotone, a blank look on his face.

"They just basically ran the ball, ran the ball, ran the ball, and we basically just couldn't stop it," Larimore said. "It's really tough to swallow."

This week, some players seemed to be in denial. Lineman John Simon would not acknowledge what the video clearly revealed - that the defensive linemen repeatedly were moved aside by Wisconsin's offensive linemen.

"I wouldn't say that," Simon said. "I would say it was just here and there, people not being where they need to be."

I think injuries have forced our hand in how we defend people. We are limited to a bend but not break style. . And we haven't had a pass rush all year. Maybe we're just not that good.

Injuries are dictating the defense. Injured secondary = Little Blitzing. We had two new safeties starting back there at the beginning of the year in Hines and Barnett and neither one of them are back there now. With so little experience it is no wonder that the coaches have taken a conservative approach to the defense. If Chekwa or Torrence go down it is going to get awful ugly back there.

Pass Defense Adjustments

Some of the talking heads managed to observe that the Buckeyes gave up 4 passes of 30 or more yards on Saturday night. Yes, one of them said it was 5, but that's beside the point. The one thing they all missed (or at least the ones that I heard missed it) is that those 4 passes comprised the first 3 passes of the First Half and the first pass of the Second Half. After that, the Buckeye pass defense was pretty tight.

Not being one to let my OCD go to waste, I ran the following numbers:
A. Weber - Before Buckeye Defense Adjustment: 4-4, 136 yards, PE: 385.60 :yow1:
A. Weber - After Buckeye Defense Adjustment: 5-16, 26 yards, int, PE: 32.40 :yow2:

This got me to thinking that this seemed to be the defense's M.O. this year, so I ran the numbers (there's that OCD again).
Opponents' First Possession of each half - 2010: 35-50, 406 yards, 3 int, 1 td, PE: 132.808 (would rank 82nd in the country)
All Other Opponents' Possessions - 2010: 97-191, 946 yards, 12 int, 3 td, PE: 85.007 (would rank 1st in the country by 4 points)
As it is, the Buckeyes are 5th in the country in PE defense.

Of the 18 halves of football the Buckeyes have played, the opponent has completed their first two pass attempts of the half on ten occasions (56% of the time). On 6 occasions, the opponent has completed at least the first 4 pass attempts of the half.

Gotta love the ability to adjust, but the slow starts are killing me.

EDIT:

For comparison, I ran the numbers for the top-ranked PE defense (Nebraska). The Cornhuskers' numbers provide food for thought.
Opponents' First Possession of each half - 2010: 15-34, 167 yards, 1 int, 1 td, PE: 89.200 (would rank 1st in the country)
All Other Opponents' Possessions - 2010: 93-195, 1017 yards, 12 int, 6 td, PE: 89.348 (would rank 1st in the country)
Additionally, the Huskers have not given up consecutive completions at the beginning of a half this year. Not once.

Nothing to back this up, but I would guess that this has held true for much of the Heacock era. The first drive or two, the Bucks seem to play somewhat vanilla, get a feel for the opponent, and then do a solid job (save for a few last minute drives which we won't get into). Rarely have they gotten pushed around for an entire game. As for the '10 version, the next three opponents will tell the tale. You've got a power run game that may be on the rise (or was it just the Michigan D that made them look good), an Iowa team that might be the best balanced attack in the conference ( I'm not excited about how the Bucks match up in the passing game, cannot give up an easy 6), and then you have to face the Oregon of the Midwest. Injuries or not, you've got to get lined up correctly, tackle well, and create turnovers when possible. On the plus side, the bye came at a good time.

Good stuff there from DBB. Also, the bit about Nebraska shows just how good a coach that Pelini is.

Another interesting tidbit about the 2010 pass defense.

Good
You probably knew that the buckeyes lead the league in interceptions.

Better
But in terms of the number of different players who have made a pick, Ohio State is #1 by a big margin.

The Buckeyes have 11 different players with at least one theft. No other Big Ten team has more than 7. The Nits and the Badgers have only 3 players each who have made a pick.

Just Plain Weird
The Buckeyes have 6 Seniors with at least one pick. No other league team has more than 3 Seniors with an INT.

The 6 Buckeye Seniors with an interception
  1. Chimdi Chekwa_____ - 3 for 22 yards
  2. Brian Rolle_______ - 2 for 30 yards and a touchdown
  3. Ross Homan________ - 1 for 7 yards
  4. Devon Torrence____ - 1 for 25 yards
  5. Jermale Hines_____ - 1 for 23 yards
  6. Cameron Heyward___ - 1 for 80 yards (more INT return yardage than any 3 other Buckeyes combined)
